USC is 27th

Kid also got 100% tuition from UF, but we chose USC.
Toyota camry does fine job but some people pay extra to get BMW Benz Porsche. Nothing is wrong with either choice all depends on your preference and situation

100% tuition at school ranked #30 vs full pay at USC ranked #27. Toyota vs Honda is the more accurate comparison.

Half tuition is about $25000 discount. That still leaves about $50,000 per year, including room and board.

Has she considered Pitt?

Yes. Will likely apply rolling early. Would love hear personal experiences on this program, though.

If she were a boy, I'd say that seems like a pretty ambitious list with a moderately rigorous curriculum and no hooks, but as a girl going into engineering it seems like it could be okay. Do Naviance and your school counselor agree?

If she's okay with a college heavy on the religion, she might consider adding Catholic U to the list. I know 5 kids with stats similar to your daughter's who have done very well with engineering degrees from there.

She may want to think more about being okay with larger universities, too, since so many of the great state schools are bigger in size. Then she could add places like Maryland, U Washington, UC Boulder, U Arizona, UCSB, etc.

Anonymous wrote:Looking for college suggestions for DD. She is a rising senior interested in engineering (but could change her mind and also likes the liberal arts).

Looking for: in or near a city, mid-sized, preferably not in the Midwest.
3.9 UW GPA at private school, moderately rigorous courses, 32 ACT (may apply TO)
No hooks

Possible candidates: Northeastern, U of Miami, Villanova, BU, BC, Wake Forest, Lehigh, LMU, USC, Santa Clara

Any feedback or other ideas?

NU engineering is super tough to get into - always has been, just be forewarned, OP.

Northwestern (NU) is not Northeastern (NEU). Their marketing is confusing.

no, https://www.nu.edu/

They may be trying to change to NU from NEU, but ask most people who are familiar with Top 50 universities, and NU is Northwestern.

Northeastern has been NU since at least the 70's. But let's not make this thread about that, shall we? Since it is obviously one of the schools that DCUM likes to go off on.

Not in a national sense. It would just make it easier if people used something else because everyone associates NU with Northwestern.

Since National University has the domain nu.edu
Northwestern should pick a differnet name not to confuse the mass general public.
First thing peole would do to learn about a college is to go to the site.
When people go to NU.edu it's Natioanl Universtiy.
Northwetern is confusing general public by calling itself NU.
They should change it to something like NWU

This is such an idiotic take. No one thinks, "Oh, yes, I just discovered a school called Vanderbilt. Let me look it up at vu.edu."

Now you know why that PP went to national uni.

Villanova if apply ED not EA
Wake Forest ED
Agree with others on exploring large publics
UMD, SUNY, so many good options
University of Vermont could really fit the bill for size, and Burlington is a lovely town

OP here, DD did a tour of U Miami last week, and she really liked it. The school seems to offer a lot of flexibility to change majors, double major, etc. It also has become very popular in the past few years.

Was trying to get DS to consider the U for CS. Ive never been a fan of FL but tech jobs are heading there. School is pretty aggressive with merit for high stats. Unfortunately DS still isn't interested. Guess we'll have to settle for MIT.

My sister and BIL went to U of Miami. They both absolutely loved it and had lots of great job prospects upon graduation. DCUM seems to always rag on it, but the people who I know in real life who went there are awesome and have great things to say.

USC Viturbi is is #15 (undergrad engineering) and has a 9-10% acceptance rate. Extraordinary recruiting to Silicon Valley. Beautiful campus. Exciting social and athletic scene. Lots of investment (new building under construction). On and on. USC is an extraordinary place.

Thank you for this. We will check it out!
Do you know how generous they are with FA (need and/or merit)?
-- not op, but other poster with daughter interested in engineering
