Of course, VT is a national university.

Such an odd question.

Being a "national university" doesn't necessarily mean that there is a strong alumni network or job prospects throughout the nation.

It actually does mean this.

Who exactly determines whether a school is a "national university?" Prior threads have estabished that the USNWR criteria is definitely not based on alumni networks, name recognition, or job prospects. (Quite a few low-ranked USNWR "national universities" are pretty obscure.) And of course VT grads will be able to compete for jobs throughout the country. But like any non-Top XX school, it won't have the same recognition in all parts of the country. Purdue grads will have a better pipeline to Chicago employers, Texas A&M grads will have a better pipeline to Houston employers, etc. just like VT grads have a stronger pipeline to mid-Atlantic employers than schools outside the region.

Grads from the colleges you mention can and do get jobs nationally. Towson is an example of a regional university where you could argue job prospects decrease with distance. VT is in a different league.

Virginia Tech has a national reputation. Certainly one could land in Chicago after graduation. However, if Chicago is a goal, the school most like VT - Purdue - would be an excellent choice for Chicago. In an era where college is often a poor value, VT and Purdue are high value schools, which also have very high alumini satisfaction scores. As an aside, as a former Chicagoan economic prospects in Chicago are growing dim, with a population exodus, poor schools, high taxes and the nation's worst pension problems, and increasing crime now in even the upper income wards, all of which impact jobs and opportunities.

At our FCPS HS it appears the "second" notch. No NMSF, academic award winners, club presidents etc. Just good students that make honor roll for the most part...and ED.

VT is expanding all over Virginia. Well beyond Blacksburg. Alexandria. Leesburg. Richmond. Hampton Roads. Abingdon. Roanoke, where it has opened VT medical school, the first medical school opened in the US in some decades. Probably some other towns I'm forgetting, as well.

The Blacksburg campus is gorgeous. A great school all around.

You reviewed the entire application for every kid going to VT in your school?

While I love VT. I think the campus is far from gorgeous. The grass is kept well but the buildings and aesthetic leave something to be desired. Same for the dorms.

It "appears" is not an extensive review nor all encompassing. Information on NMSF (press and school), award winners (press and school), club presidents (school and social media) and choice of school (school and social media) is readily available.

This is certainly not the case for our FCPS HS. Some of the top kids in the class are headed to VT. Hardly “second notch”.

DP. I totally disagree. I love the stone gothic buildings and archways. The architecture is very impressive and interesting. Love that Hogwarts aesthetic.

Anecdotes don’t really suggest what you’re claiming.

Through various sources: HS communication, newspapers, yearbook, social media and year end senior newsletter, it would not appear the top notch students from my kids' school attend VT. Just an observation. No need to be offended.

It's a pretty quintessential college campus look with the open green space and the consistent gothic style buildings. It might not be your favorite, but objectively it's a nice campus and way above average

DP. Oh well - I guess my anecdote cancels out yours. Many of our HS's top students went to VT. Kind of bizarre the length you go to investigate kids who are not your own. Tiger Mom commitment!
