My DD wants to work in Chicago, where her dad and extended family are. Do job recruiters and the alumni network extend out beyond the VA region?

There are alumni chapters all over the country and world. Chicago has a chapter.

https://www.alumni.vt.edu/chapters/chapter_list.html

VT will have at least 30 job fairs this school year, attended by recruiters from all over the country looking for many different majors.

Of course, VT is a national university.

Nope, this isn't important.

Agree - sports are any more valuable than any other EC. The students I know there mostly are not athletes.

Varsity sport serves as a sort of shorthand for a lot of good qualities. Other ECs are harder to quickly draw conclusions about (all for better or worse).

What qualities?

+1. The amount of BS that parents spew on here is unbelievable. I know varsity sports kids who are outstanding people and others who are complete d-bags.. just like kids pursuing any other EC. There are more d-bag kids in sports that in any other EC.. Maybe that's what universities are looking for

Being a "national university" doesn't necessarily mean that there is a strong alumni network or job prospects throughout the nation.

It actually does mean this.

Who exactly determines whether a school is a "national university?" Prior threads have estabished that the USNWR criteria is definitely not based on alumni networks, name recognition, or job prospects. (Quite a few low-ranked USNWR "national universities" are pretty obscure.) And of course VT grads will be able to compete for jobs throughout the country. But like any non-Top XX school, it won't have the same recognition in all parts of the country. Purdue grads will have a better pipeline to Chicago employers, Texas A&M grads will have a better pipeline to Houston employers, etc. just like VT grads have a stronger pipeline to mid-Atlantic employers than schools outside the region.

Grads from the colleges you mention can and do get jobs nationally. Towson is an example of a regional university where you could argue job prospects decrease with distance. VT is in a different league.

Just wanted to add that my cousin got in 2 years ago to Tech with no sports or clubs but a great GPA. Wasn’t leadership at her high school, didn’t work, but had good grades.

2 years ago is like 10 years ago in college admissions game years.
