Much of Virginia DOES NOT qualify to go mask-optional now. Much of VA is still HIGH. Not surprising. I appreciate that their new map really shows who hasn't done what they were supposed to do regarding vaccinations. If you didn't vaccinate, your area has high spread and high hospitalizations. The map doesn't lie.

Fairfax is now in the Low/green category according to the CDC guidelines released today.

Yes, sherlock! I know. But, I went back in time to look at when we actually hit those new benchmarks. And the earliest we could have qualified under the current standards was Feb. 11th. Of course, we didn't have those standards on Feb. 11th (although we should have-- if CDC had their act together). But for all those people saying that Youngkin was right and those who wanted to drop masks back in Jan. or even early Feb. --- this new rubric would not have supported your claim. It wasn't until Feb. 11th that we were under 200 cases per 7 days.

I don’t think so, the school district still doesn’t allow it. They made it clear that even with March 1st they still prefer people wearing masks. Staff for sure. Unless they plan on sending another email, acknowledging CDC new guidelines, but I highly doubt that. FCPS is going to pretend it didn’t even happen. I planned on sending kids to school with masks on the 1st, since I didn’t want to be “that parent”. Not anymore, no masks on March 1st

I believe that, many kids this age are super conscious of their looks and don’t mind hiding behind a mask.

My 6th grader said that the teachers polled the students. Out of a group of 36 (two classes that they know about), there are 5 students and 1 teacher that would opt out of wearing masks. The rest don't find it onerous, and DD said that the kids are happy to hide behind their masks for as long as they can.

Or they are too scared to raise their hand.

Potentially. My DS is in 4th and has come home reporting when so and so got their second vaccination shot. His class seems to be pretty openly discussing it, complete with kids whining about why they had to go to the Government Center when other kids only had to go to the Giant. No one has asked the kids opinions about masks at school so who knows what they are thinking. I do know that his entire basketball team is wearing masks during games. They play at a ES gym and the masks are not required but a note was sent home asking parents to have the kids wear mask because of COVID. At Scout meetings I have to remind a few kids to pull theirs up over their nose and they do and it stays up.

I doubt any of them like wearing masks but they don't seem to be put out to be wearing them. I'll be interested to hear what happens at his school on Monday, I suspect most of the kids will be wearing masks and that it will be a while before things change.

Wow. Bizarre. Which league is this? My kids have played in two different leagues using FCPS gyms this fall/winter and no kids are playing in masks.

Same for us. Occasionally we see one player on an opposing team with a mask but that’s it.

I am a teacher and I doubt FCPS will give in easily on the teachers. They are so pissed that they can’t control kids and families so they will control us instead. 🙂

All staff received an email today. As of 10:40am this morning, all adults—staff, parents, visitors—have to wear masks. When and if the CDC and VDH guidelines change, they will update the policy and communicate it. They can send an email over the weekend.
