Although, Midge saying no opening acts to the extent that she will turn down opening for Tony Bennett is just so absurd. Just beyond spoiled and entitled, you have to hate the character at that point.

I think we're supposed to realize - when Midge realizes - that her turning this down is because she's still so shocked and battered by what happened with Shy Baldwin. That really threw her, and this whole season she's been sort of in denial about what happened - but has been making terrible choices because of it. Lenny's speech is supposed to force her to face what happened, and actually move on in a smart way.

PP here. I agree.

Of course. There is no deep analysis here. He directly says you take chances and risks and if they fail - you keep going. He was addressing her failure to go on- to not take risks. He explained how he’s loved and hated and how he still pushes forward. I liked the speech, too, but let’s be real. She saw him at his lowest point and helped. Him showing up at her club to watch her bit was not realistic. Neither was anything that happened thereafter as far as him seeking her out. He wouldn’t have done that. Druggies don’t seek out people who want to discuss their problems, esp those who are transient to their lives.

He's her magic pixie dream comic. He's also much better looking than the real Lenny Bruce. Doesn't mean we can't appreciate him being the angel on her shoulder (and sometimes in bed).

The best friend saying she’d just pat people in the hospital corridor <- this was the SIL, not best friend

Abe saying he heard a death rattle when he really dropped his keys

Mei saying she went to yankee stadium instead of the hospital. <- running joke about Joel's terrible Chinese dictionary

Why wouldn’t joel be with shirley the night of his dad’s heat attack when he thinks he caused it?

The scene where Susie keeps cursing when the receptionist’s kids are running around the lobby

Mei, a woman in medical school, can’t understand why her boyfriend’s or husband’s kids would be visiting and bathing at their home? <- Joel hasn't proposed yet, has he? I thought her confusion was about the "stepmother" role as opposed to "mother of Joel's new baby" which is how she's thinking about it

When the phone repairman is there and the secretary asks Susie if the building has ever been somewhere else? Omg

That said I agree that this season has been a mess. And I don't understand how they're paying their bills - the Wolford plus pawning crystal glasses Rose gets from matchmaking plus the $2/month or whatever pittance Abe is getting from the Village Voice?

I don't think Mei couldn't understand - it's just, she hadn't thought this through yet and was panicking at the idea of this actually happening. She and Joel have had a very sort of contained relationship - they haven't joined their lives up with those of their people. She's still interviewing for jobs in Chicago! This was her being sort of forced to confront what this is going to mean in a day to day life sort of way, if she and Joel get married. I don't think it's what she wants - not sure how they are going to do this.

Don’t you get the idea it is what she wants when, after being confronted with the realities by Midge, she was initially shocked but, shortly thereafter, is cuddled up to Joel in a public hallway (not her typical MO)?

And…what about all the other points?

It wasn't the SIL patting arms in the hospital corridor. It was Imogene. Who was there with her husband, Archie.

The clarifications (sil vs best friend, etc) don't really change how dumb it all is.

So what happened to the writers? Did they lose their mojo after the fabulous first season and just started riffing on their old stuff?

I honestly did not realize episode 8 was the season finale til I read it in this thread. Definitely not the best season so far.

What did people think of the scene where rose was hypnotized?

The mobsters?

Each of the entire performances of the girls at the strip club? (Did we need to spend minutes watching the whole song?)

Why would midge talk about her encounter with the guy from the park at the jfk thing when she had already messed up with her shy Baldwin set (talking about what she shouldn’t have), after she’d been instructed to keep it clean at the jfk thing? These things aren’t realistic.

Why the whole firing of the secretary scene when she wasn’t fired? Why the African American comedian when the story was built and then left hanging?

Agreed but she should have floundered for an episode or two (not the whole season) before realizing it. That season should have been an episode.

Truly awful writing. I wouldn’t be surprised if it got canceled. It was unwatchable.

I’m so surprised by the negative reviews! I still enjoy the show except for the strip club scene. I don’t care for the Joel/Mei storyline, but that may be because I want Midge and Joel to get back together.

What was really unbelievable was a luncheon entertainer actually verbalizing that she had sex with a man in her set schpiel. It would absolutely never have been verbalized anywhere! In fact, maybe never even in chatting with a friend. This was not acceptable in culture. People now don't realize this. Lenny Bruce was arrested for saying something far less in a set. But the free discussion of sex wasn't ever happening.

The words, the F-us, the cursing, and a lot of the phrasing and comments were definitely not happening on stage , but not even in social company. F bombs started in the mid 80s.
The writers blew it big time. The characters like Suzy and Abe were reduced to cartoon characters. This could have been wonderful and it was ruined.

Hooray for set, costuming, casting, partial research, but the writers blew it in the last 2 seasons.
