I don't think Mei couldn't understand - it's just, she hadn't thought this through yet and was panicking at the idea of this actually happening. She and Joel have had a very sort of contained relationship - they haven't joined their lives up with those of their people. She's still interviewing for jobs in Chicago! This was her being sort of forced to confront what this is going to mean in a day to day life sort of way, if she and Joel get married. I don't think it's what she wants - not sure how they are going to do this.[/quote]

Don’t you get the idea it is what she wants when, after being confronted with the realities by Midge, she was initially shocked but, shortly thereafter, is cuddled up to Joel in a public hallway (not her typical MO)?
