Sidwell to increase tuition a WHOPPING 6.7%

Most of us send our kids to SFS for quality education. Sooner or later your kids will be a senior. Parents should express our real concern and interests while paying increasing tuitions.

Isn't SFS the only private school with 10 national merit semifinalists or something like that?

They started at a lower price point than the other Big3 schools. STA was $51K this current year and NCS was $49K. Sidwell is just catching up.

Is it for the educator for the college placement?

But most NMSFs didn't get in EA/ED. LOL. Sidwell CCO is really subpar.

Not enough.

15 year teacher 70-80ish

I really don't understand why schools that make millions in tuition every year don't pay teachers better.

It’s not a for profit enterprise. They are not “mak[ing]” money. But yes, I agree that teacher compensation should be higher.

Hear, hear! I've been a Sidwell parent for more than a decade and the school is now basically unmoored from its mandate -- teaching -- at this point. Instead, social engineering is the curriculum. God, I hope that's not where the money is going.

It's going to building debt. As always. And before the "but they got 2 big donations from anonymous donors" poster enters the fray, let's be clear: Until thise anonymous giant donors stepped up to cover "nearly half" of the new building costs, Sidwell was basically down 100% of the costs with no end in sight. With no other anonymous donors willing to write $10 million plus checks apiece, where else is the money going to come from?

This. Someone should ask Bryan or the board how much tuition revenue is allocated to interest and principal payments on the long-term debt.

There are 16 or 18 national merit semifinalists. However, the majority of top students who have taken the rigor courses have not got in. The EA/ED students are either recruited athletes, URM or those with a hook. The process is not transparent so college AO may not know who are the real top students.

I teach at a private preschool and honestly I hope we raise tuition and salaries. The risk and stress just aren’t worth it for what we make and there’s going to be a teacher exodus at some point.

Cabinet Secretaries make like $200k. It would be nearly 25% of his gross for one kid.

Ohh ouch, you're right.

Actually, it's much worse because tuition is paid in after-tax dollars. At 200K he's paying 40%.

If only he had a partner to share child expenses with. Oh, right, he happily does!

His partner doesn’t have a job and they were both unemployed prior to 2021.

I’d like to hear from one SFS teacher - just one - who gets 6.7% increase.

STA is both more expensive and charges the same tuition for all grades, 4-12. So whatever point you’re making is wrong. STA is the most expensive school in the DMV.

NCS also changes the same tuition for all grades. It’s US tuition is cheaper by a few hundred dollars but their LS tuition is obviously significantly more expensive.

And don’t think other private schools also don’t know this. What better coup for a private school that to recruit away the top teachers from a rival because they were willing to compensate them marginally better.
