s/o do people really LIKE Cracker Barrel?

It's fine for what it is, which is road trip food and diversion from being on the road (people wander around in the gift shop and look at tchochkes, play the games at the table, stretch their legs and sit on the rocking chairs).

They are often located on long stretches of interstate.

Love the Chicken & Dumplings- but only go once every 3-4 years or so.

Had this recently. Ate just a little. Dumplings were tasteless. Gravy had an "off" metallic taste. Chicken was few and far between. Had the runs next day. Won't be returning

Who orders chicken and dumplings expecting a flavor bomb? The dumplings are literally made of flour and fat. The gravy is flour, fat, and chicken broth. The chicken is boiled. Look -- I get it, my body is not used to fatty foods and when I eat too much of it, I get gastro distress. But caveat emptor! If I eat chicken fried steak with gravy, I don't expect to feel great afterwards. Only farm hands and Olympians can eat these many calories regularly, but this type of food won't kill you every once in a while. It is what it is.

I didn't grow up eating chicken and dumplings, but I LOVE it, and my stomach handles it well (unfortunately, very sensitive stomach). I make it from scratch a lot, and it does not have to have a lot of fat. I use about 2 tablespoons of butter in 1.5 cups of flour to make the dumplings, and the dumplings come out fine. Basically, it's a simple chicken fricassee without the cream or wine, but with dumplings. It's the flour in the dumplings that thickens the broth and make it creamy in place of the cream - so not really a lot of fat if you make it at home. So good.

We've stopped on road trips. The last time was about 10 years ago and the fried fish and greens were surprisingly good. It was fun and my daughter loved it. For what it is, it's fine. For those bashing, no one is forcing you to go.

It's good on road trips, just don't order a salad.

It's okra. For one horrifying moment I thought you were talking about fried orca.

A few times a year max. It’s a meal that makes me full and like I want a nap. I eat the breakfast. Haven’t really had anything else.

I have eaten at Michelin star restaurants all over the United States and Western Europe. And I would NEVER say no to the Cracker Barrel. Chicken n’Dumplings is my order. That’s good living right there.
