There used to be a GTA listserv that was fairly active that discussed the needs of gifted learners. I just checked and there does not appear to be any activty since 2020. I am not sure why.

Even so, I have to say we hate MCPS lottery system. It's difficult to explain to the kids that your lives sometimes are decided by lottery, instead of your efforts.

Good lucks to all.

Let me guess, you weren't born and raised in this country?
Good luckS to you, then.

What's with the xenophobia? Are you the other-end-of-the-spectrum poster?

From where do you draw that inference? It appears as though there is an unnecessary ongoing intent ro mischaracterize the position of the person pointing out the difference in approach to the differnt needs.

Are we to infer from your misspelled words that you "weren't born and raised in this country?"

Ad hominen -- digging yourself deeper with the logical fallacies.

Nope. Just that typing on a phone keypad is not as easy as typing on a keyboard

Contact MCCPTA GEC. It has a listserv you can get on. There's also a Facebook group.

Yes, whatever you write here will not influence MCPS, except for their PR monitoring intern who will say "parents STILL angry about magnet admission criteria." MCPS is not a customer service organization. They are a government monopoly. As such, their mission is to ensure that all the children meet the government standards for education by graduation. Whether your gifted child gets the best possible education for their unique needs is not one of those government mandates. (Unlike some other states, PA for one, that have Gifted IEPs) It gets better for high school when your student has more choice to pursue their individual interests and talents.

There is no other choice for public education. If you can, vote with your feet - contact the Feynman School or another private that has the capability of being more personalized to your child's needs.

Wow, you really didn't get the point of that.

Wow, you really didn't get the point of that. And there were no ad hominem in my words.

Explain the point? This is like reading the long-ago inanities of tooskinnejs about housing.

The ad hominem -- to the [person] instead of to the argument-- was the insinuation that misspellings indicated the poster was tied to some foreign-born thinking, as though that, in and of itself, was some reason to discredit their thoughts. Ad hominem attacks are logical fallacies, indicating that the debater's own position is too weak to support on its own merits (or on the weaknesses of the other side).

Yadda yadda yadda. You do realize that somebody has been saying this every year ... for years?

And now the data proves it too. Go find the students who reached the National level Mathcounts team in 2021. Traditionally, students from Takoma Park and Roberto Clemente represented in Mathcounts national team. In 2021, there were two students from Robert Frost, one from Hoover and only one from Takoma Park Middle School.
RIP magnet program!

I've never understood the argument that the Magnets Are Dead because kids who engage in competition math are now distributed among other schools. To me, that says that they are still getting a strong math education outside the magnet, and that the new system of creating "cohorts" of high achieving kids is working.

You are right it does show strong cohorts. It ALSO SHOWS that magnet quality has gone down and the Curriculum is in actuality being “watered down.”

That's complete fiction. The magnet was stronger than ever up until the lottery. Now it's a joke.

It is not because of the efforts of these local schools that the high achieving kids are performing, but because of the efforts of their parents and outside school activities. But you are right, MCPS will use that statistics to claim exactly what you thought!

That's the point. That's what the xenophobic poster was insinuating passive aggressively. I really shouldn't have to explain this.

I have never understood why they have not implemented the English classes from Eastern at home middle schools.

Well, you're the one that's casting their thought as xenophobic without evidence/argument/clarificatuin, and it would appear you're doing that just to try to undercut the thought without arguing against it. Ad hominem. Logical fallacy. Weak position. Then pointing to it as though it had been made a fact. Bankrupt Political Maneuvers 101.
