Why are you hanging out in the left lane?

Even if someone is parking in the left lane, you're an idiot if you don't leave following distance it's a basic safety measure.

This thread isn’t about tailgaters. It’s about people who don’t follow the universal rules of the road. It’s inconsiderate and dangerous.

Again, if people in the left lane are already going at or above the speed limit, why are you still angry?

I’m not angry. Just trying to understand why they feel entitled to just stay there and block traffic.

It’s dangerous and even illegal in VA.

No, your speeding, tailgating and reckless endangerment is illegal.

Nobody needs to move over if they are already going the speed limit and the right lane is stuffed with slow-moving trucks. You seem to imagine a lone stretch of highway in the desert, but FOTM is that the beltway here is almost always clogged in all lanes. No need to make way for a$$holes like you.

Wrong.

I speed, but not excessively (try to stay <10mph over).
I don’t tailgate.
I don’t drive recklessly.

This thread isn’t about me. It’s about drivers who hang out in the left lane. It’s illegal to hang out in the left lane in VA.

There isn’t magically one open lane and two clogged lanes. Stop with the excuses. After you pass, move back over. If that’s too challenging for you, I recommend taking driving class to boost your lane-changing skills.

There’s no legitimate reason to cruise in the left so move over.

Exactly.

Plus, it’s illegal in many areas.

Let stupid fight stupid. If you are stuck behind a left lane monitor it won’t be long until another idiot in a huge truck comes barreling down the lane. Get the f out of her way and let them play the game of chicken. 99 percent times the tailgater wins and clears the road for you.

I might be passing in the left lane and some agressive jack thinks I am doing too slowly and is on my tail like an entitled jerk. Get these fools off the road.

The crazy reckless speeding tailgators are a far greater danger than people obeying the speed limit in all lanes of traffic. No false equivalencies please.

Ok. Let’s recap.

Don’t excessively speed.
Don’t tailgate.
Don’t linger in the left lane.

The flow of traffic was great everyone passed and moved over. In Orlando the cops also enforce the left lane passing rules.

Pennsylvania, Ohio and Florida drivers are good about this and it's much more efficient.

Sounds like a BS excuse for getting a ticket. Thankfully i don't live in the former confederacy where some racist sheriff may try to pull you over on some technicality.

Awesome. You will have a front row seat if carnage ensues. Great plan.

There seems to be a collateral consequence that aggressive drivers also now treat the right lane as the passing lane now and it sucks. I almost never end up in the left lane due to the nature of my commute (by the time I got over, I'd have to get over again for a lane split), but people passing on the right makes merging in a lot more hazardous as someone just zooms in the right unexpectedly.

I'm not trying to be daft I'm asking because I got the finger on 1-70 a few weeks ago.

There are only two lanes. I was going 10 miles OVER the posted 70 MPH in the left lane. Some guy flashed lights I got over then he gave me the finger as he drove by going 90. I was honestly clueless I have never in my 49 years heard that the left lane is only for passing. Is this true for two lane roads like I-70? Is everyone supposed to be in the right lane to make room for passing and people going 90 MPH?

Also he didn't get back over he stayed in the left.

Yes, on a two-lane per direction road you are generally supposed to be in the right hand lane unless you have a reason to be on the left (e.g., passing, just merging in, preparing for a left-hand exit/turn). Part of the idea is to keep the lane clear, but it also helps if drivers know that cars will usually only be passing on the left.

The driver who passed you was in one way doing the right thing (flashing lights to encourage you to move over so as to pass on the left, rather than just moving over to pass on the right) but also doing wrong things (speeding excessively, continuing in the left-hand lane). And flipping anyone off on the road is unnecessary and counterproductive. But while the other driver shouldn't be doing 90, it's also not your role to police that person's speed. Staying to the right helps keep you out of the way of such people and reduces the risk of an accident which, even if the other person's fault, could still have bad consequences for you.

You did NOTHING wrong. If you were going 10 UNDER in the left lane, then maybe pull over to the right. But if you're already speeding yourself then there is absolutely no need to give in to a crazy bully who wants to go 90.
