The ones that went on the Today show and lied?

I think they believed her, were simply in denial their child could have done something so horrible. I can’t imagine how they must be feeling right now.

To me, that doesn't matter. They had their daughter back. They should have shut up at that point. Why did they go on the show? To defend themselves and their daughter's honor - purely selfish reasons. By going on the Today show and repeating her story, they stoked fear in the community and made it even harder for victims in the future to be taken seriously. I would have sympathy if they would have kept a low profile and let this play out.

You and your arrogance also have the benefit of being an armchair quarterback.
You're not emotionally involved (and exhausted). You didn't go through 3 long days of no sleep, not knowing where you child was. You have no idea.

Hindsight is 50/50, and you have no idea how you'd react in the same situation.
You couldn't know, and if you say you do, you're lying.
This situation is completely unrelatable.

I imagine they were being advised of what to do/say by family, friends, other influences, etc and they followed someone's lead.

These aren't professional scam artists, they're people who believed that their daughter was missing and may not see her ever again, and when they find out she was lying, they probably didn't know how to proceed from there.

From what I read, the show was booked long before she came home .. do you think they were gonna let them back out without a fight?? Shows like "Today" (who are in DAILY ratings wars with other morning shows) put an immense amount of pressure on these types of families, and make promises they usually don't keep.

It's a situation that her parents weren't mentally prepared for -- they deserve our grace, not your never ending judgements.

They raised her. They have an idea of what she's capable of or at least know more of her history that this didn't come out of left field. Probably some permissive parenting is what led to this situation in the first place. Hopefully this is the wake up call the entire family needs in order to get help or open their eyes.

Whatever did or did not transpire in the past, I don’t think anyone doubts their eyes are open now.

They stated that she was on the phone with 911 while she said she was following the toddler in her car. From data on her phone’s GPS/360 app they can determine that she in actuality drove 600 yards.

Carlee probably doesn’t know (well maybe now she does lol) how much information LE actually has figured out.

Civilians often have no concept of how much data is available via their phones, including “erased” search histories.

Along with Search history, phone data, touch dna, Etc.

They have history on burner phones, discarded by the alleged Gilgo beach murderer 10 years ago and searches made logged into fake google accounts.

And what I learned from the Murdoch case is they can tell when your phone locks and unlocks and sees your face and doesn’t see your face, and is flipped, turned, and thrown!

Not only that, someone else can commit a crime, and they can confiscate your phone and all of your communication to and from that person that may be relevant.

I admittedly do watch a lot of true crime, and I warn my husband. Cameras are everywhere and when you’re talking in front of law enforcement, they are recording you. In 2023, just don’t commit a crime and don’t associate with people that may be involved in crimes.

She does have a history of these kinds of shenanigans.
That came out along with the things about her stealing from work and trying to get her ex's attention.
like what?

Yup. She must be horrified right now realizing the cops know she made the whole thing up and there’s really no getting out of it.

Nah, people like this don't get horrified. She's probably doubling down, and will go to her grave insisting that she was abducted while trying to save a toddler.

You’re probably totally right. I mean, what would be in it for her to come clean at this point?

Don't bother trying to talk some sense into her. She's just as bad as Carlee

They probably legitimately believed her, unless she had engaged in behavior previously that would lead them to question her.

She lied so easily and stole several items from her employer. She is a problem kid and they know it. There is no way they believed her when she returned. No way. They needed to stop talking to media and get help for her and their family. They are wasting resources that need to be focused elsewhere.

Never underestimate the power of denial plus a kid’s capacity to be sneaky.

This is beyond being sneaky and they know it. You know this isn't new. They need to stop with the lies, circle their wagons, protect their family, get a good lawyer and family/individual counseling before they make it worse.

She could keep the PD from making the rest of her search history public

I thought it was a trucker driving by who phoned in this tip?

It was someone who claimed to be a truck driver. But that entire scenario didn’t happen. So it had to be someone who was helping her, right?

Someone could have remembered seeing a car in that area and phoned in the info. It happens.

Glad you’ve never had black-pit-level mental health struggles. Some of us get it, at least in general. That is not to say we sanction the actions. NP.

I didn't mean to be snarky, I was surprised. The attention would be horrible for me when I'm depressed.

+1 we have zero information to tear effect. So maybe, maybe not. All we know is she seems to have spiraled after her ex started dating someone new.

Eh. I lied to my parents when I was younger and was doing things (dating guys, going to clubs) that I knew they would disapprove of. I also stole office supplies from my employer (never money). Yet, doing something this insane would have been completely out of character for me, and shocked my parents.

Yeah, it seems clear they believed she was abducted. We don’t know when that changed. Maybe not until the press conference today!

The le seem to be doing things in a fair manner. I'd bet a lot of money they shared this information with the parents yesterday if not sooner.

I don’t get people saying she is mentally ill. She sounds immature, selfish and not very bright but that doesn’t mean she is mentally ill.

You would call 911 and lie so easily to them? You would calmly related the story of being kidnapped by the balding red headed trucker and his woman?

Thank you for saying that. It’s not rational, more of a pathetic cry for help, love, and attention than anything else.

Look up borderline personality disorder, which often clusters with narcissism. Her behavior here fits, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t selfish and immature. It all tends to cluster.
