Woman missing after reporting seeing a toddler on the highway

For anyone who didn't get to watch live, but wants to, here's the news conference: https://youtu.be/ywjupbGPuYM

I agree that the LE did a good job handling this directly but with sensitivity to the family. It's clear they're trying to respect her parents while trying to get answers. Such a disturbing chain of events.

Well her life is ruined, and it will be challenging for her loved ones to forgive her. I hope that’s sufficient deterrence!

No, I think there should be criminal charges. I don't necessarily think she needs a harsh punishment, but a conviction ensures that these actions follow her. Would you want someone like, with so little regard for truth, this caring for your child or your parents? A conviction would come up on employment and licensing background checks, ensuring that this episode will be known and considered before she can be put in a position of trust.

You don't think that the court of public opinion will haunt her for the rest of her life?? 🤯

Same.

Are you serious?

Original PP. Yeah, why wouldn’t I be serious?

This lady actually did it, as have others. Why does it surprise you to hear others have thought about it or similar extreme behaviors? Luckily I was grounded in reality to the extent that I knew there was no way it would turn out well for me. But I’ve done other really unhinged things not quite on that level.

I have borderline personality disorder. I suspect Carlee does too.

I wondered about this. Extreme need for attention/ love, unstable behavior etc.

For those posting recaps, I want to clarify that Carlee didn’t explicitly say that she drove 600 yards following the toddler.

They stated that she was on the phone with 911 while she said she was following the toddler in her car. From data on her phone’s GPS/360 app they can determine that she in actuality drove 600 yards.

Carlee probably doesn’t know (well maybe now she does lol) how much information LE actually has figured out.

Civilians often have no concept of how much data is available via their phones, including “erased” search histories.

Yup. She must be horrified right now realizing the cops know she made the whole thing up and there’s really no getting out of it.

I really hope this doesn't all get excused by "mental health issues". She likely has a personality disorder, which is not the same thing.

The ones that went on the Today show and lied?

I think they believed her, were simply in denial their child could have done something so horrible. I can’t imagine how they must be feeling right now.

To me, that doesn't matter. They had their daughter back. They should have shut up at that point. Why did they go on the show? To defend themselves and their daughter's honor - purely selfish reasons. By going on the Today show and repeating her story, they stoked fear in the community and made it even harder for victims in the future to be taken seriously. I would have sympathy if they would have kept a low profile and let this play out.

You and your arrogance also have the benefit of being an armchair quarterback.
You're not emotionally involved (and exhausted). You didn't go through 3 long days of no sleep, not knowing where you child was. You have no idea.

Hindsight is 50/50, and you have no idea how you'd react in the same situation.
You couldn't know, and if you say you do, you're lying.
This situation is completely unrelatable.

I imagine they were being advised of what to do/say by family, friends, other influences, etc and they followed someone's lead.

These aren't professional scam artists, they're people who believed that their daughter was missing and may not see her ever again, and when they find out she was lying, they probably didn't know how to proceed from there.

From what I read, the show was booked long before she came home .. do you think they were gonna let them back out without a fight?? Shows like "Today" (who are in DAILY ratings wars with other morning shows) put an immense amount of pressure on these types of families, and make promises they usually don't keep.

It's a situation that her parents weren't mentally prepared for -- they deserve our grace, not your never ending judgements.

Lol. You are a lunatic

They probably legitimately believed her, unless she had engaged in behavior previously that would lead them to question her.

She lied so easily and stole several items from her employer.

Eh. I lied to my parents when I was younger and was doing things (dating guys, going to clubs) that I knew they would disapprove of. I also stole office supplies from my employer (never money). Yet, doing something this insane would have been completely out of character for me, and shocked my parents.

Yeah, it seems clear they believed she was abducted. We don’t know when that changed. Maybe not until the press conference today!

I am picturing Carlee, her parents, brother, sil and boyfriend watching the presser together and they are all turning to her saying "WTF"!!

Nah, people like this don't get horrified. She's probably doubling down, and will go to her grave insisting that she was abducted while trying to save a toddler.

I hope she gets the help she needs to be a better person.

Just picture her being a nurse...

NP. You lack empathy and compassion.

They raised her. They have an idea of what she's capable of or at least know more of her history that this didn't come out of left field. Probably some permissive parenting is what led to this situation in the first place. Hopefully this is the wake up call the entire family needs in order to get help or open their eyes.

I wonder if she had confessed before today if the police would have withheld some or all of this embarrassing information. Another reason to be honest starting now. The cops likely have even more details.

She does have a history of these kinds of shenanigans.
That came out along with the things about her stealing from work and trying to get her ex's attention.
