OMG. Faux pas of the century here...

Anonymous
One of my dearest friends is a horrible cook but thinks she's amazing. Like makes elaborate concoctions but substitutes ingredients, like she once even subbed sugar for SALT in a cake because she wanted it to have that savory sea salt taste but used actual table salt. That kind of thing. It's a running joke secretly among our friend group...not malicious, just like, oh god...

Well she brought over cupcakes for my husband's birthday which was a lovely thought but they're basically rock hard. I was texting with a mutual friend and said how I almost broke a tooth trying to bite the cupcake and jokingly said we need to give her a GRUBHUB gift card. Well I was absentminded and TEXTED IT TO MY FRIEND. THE FRIEND WHO CANNOT COOK.

She hasn't replied yet.

That’s not a faux pas. That’s you being really, really mean about someone who took the time to bake for you. I would NEVER talk about my friends like that. And I wouldn’t allow anyone else to do it either. You are toxic.

With respect, most friend groups have silly side jokes about their friends. You seem judgmental about this. I think it's super common.

No. It’s not common. It’s immature, middle school, mean girl behavior. Adults don’t behave like that.

Yes, they do. I have no fashion sense and it's a common joke. Adults definitely tease each other about their foibles.

Yes, they may tease their friends to their face but not behind their back. Grow up.

I have to say that people shouldn't be distributing rock-hard cupcakes. That's mean too!

You sound like the most un-fun person on the planet.

NP. "When people tell you who they are, believe them."

You told her who you are, OP. For her sake, I hope she believes you.

These are not remotely congruent. Your friend makes things for you as a gift. She spends her time and money on you. And in response, you say mean things. Your fashion sense of lack thereof is purely personal.

I’ll be surprised if your friend replies to you.

You need to talk with your friend face to face. Sending her a text isn’t good enough.

It’s one thing to tease a friend openly, and quite different to make fun of her behind her back. I would be super hurt by this if I baked for you. (And I am perfectly able to laugh about my character flaws and mistakes.)
