Ornato is a USSS officer that was working on the detail in the Trump White House. During the Trump administration he took leave from the USSS to go work for the Administration directly as Deputy Chief of Staff - which raised eyebrows at the time since the Secret Service shouldn't be partisan. Ornato coordinated the photo op of Trump with the Bible in Lafayette Square after protestors were forcibly removed.

Between that time and January 6th, Ornato went back into the USSS and was in charge of Secret Service movements on January 6th. So Ornato had the authority to direct Pence's detail to an alternate location, which is why Pence telling the one agent, "I trust you, but you aren't driving that car" is at least something that should be looked into.

I think it's pretty well accepted that the USSS is very conservative as far as risk goes, so maybe whisking Pence to Andrews was just their MO.

But at the end of the day Pence wasn't willing to get into a car driven by the USSS that was directed by Trump's former Deputy Chief of Staff on January 6th.

It definitely needs to be looked into.

Although Pence himself was at that moment VP and part of the Executive Branch and, in theory, obliged to follow the orders of the President, he was also in that moment, in a Legislative Branch building performing his Constitutionally mandated role in a Legislative Branch act.

The Capitol was actually, not just a place of physical shelter but also the one place that the orders of the Commander in Chief could not reach if Pence refused to obey.

Yeah, I’m not saying he stayed in the Capitol because he wanted to be a hero - as Liz Cheney calls him. What he did was about his own skin and preserving his ability to run. He could have go e back to the WH after the electoral vote count and denounced Trump, but he didn’t. He also could have done more before the coup.

I think Pence COULD have had a massive political triumph if he had publicly denounced Trump and backed impeachment and conviction. The GOP is feckless and directionless. They would have followed Pence. Pence would have brought all the Never Trumpers back, would have even received support (if grudging) from the Democrats and would be talked about as such a statesman while he cooled his heels for a few years until the 2024 election.

I heard a lot about Antifa in the months after Jan6 from trumpers. Antifa was the reason for the violence at the Capitol, they say. I don't hear anything about it anymore. They say they have "moved on." Evidently "moved on" means not evaluating what they said in the past to see if it still holds true. Or maybe "gasp!" they made a mistake trusting the people who were pushing the Antifa story line.

Your mistake is in assuming that they, like you and I, mean what they say and try to have reasons for saying things.

They just want to overthrow the government and install a fascist oligarchical theocracy. That’s it. They want to crush normal people and make everyone as sad, lonely, scared and miserable as they are and as they think everyone should be. Some of the middle class joiners to the right wing clown car joined when they felt their kid's futures were put in jeopardy by the current college debacle. They saw their white privileged kids didn't have an advantage and lesser colleges became a reach. Where I live in the outer suburbs I saw the parents of white kids, particularly of boys, being oblivious to the reality of the college game as it stands today because they just assumed their kids had the right pedigree to get in to one of the better schools despite the fact that their kids didn't stack up so favorably anymore. I saw politically inactive parents lose their minds when Larlo and Larla didn't get in to UVA but the kid of immigrants did.
