WTH? They clearly weren’t planning on staying in U.K. long.

Try again. The world is on their side watching racist Britain burn.

A majority of Canadians want Prince Harry to become Canada's governor general

https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/a-majority-of-canadians-want-prince-harry-to-become-governor-general

The poll was taken on Jan 6 before the story broke. And it interviewed 1500 Canadians who answered their landlines during midday - likely a sample of the older folks. I am Canadian - Canadians don't get too worked up about much and they won't get worked up about this either. The older generations are often very pro Royal Family - younger generations more indifferent. Canada doesn't really have paparazzi and we wouldn't put up with major invasions of privacy. Harry won't become governor general but he may be given some ambassador title or something. If Canadians have to fork over millions for security then there will be a murmur of disagreement but it will just happen. Trudeau has a minority government so he can't do much right now - his hands are pretty tied. He needs the support of the other parties.

No. The public seems to be sympathetic and wishing them well.
But okay... we’ll all stop calling him Prince Harry

Those are not diametrically opposed. You can be sympathetic and wish people well, and at the same time believe that they should not be prancing around as royals if they don't want the royal responsibilities that go along with it.

Again. We’ll all stop calling him Prince Harry is that makes you feel better. I’m sure nobody will want them for various engagements now! You win!
Feel better?

WTH? They clearly weren’t planning on staying in U.K. long.

This has mentioned by me twice already in this thread. People keep skipping over it. To me, it’s huge and says they aren’t discussing anything, merely informing.

I think Meghan and Harry expected the Queen and Prince Charles to roll over and cave to their demands (like they ALWAYS DO). The Firm has bent over backwards to give them everything they’ve asked for. Why should this latest plan be anything different? They underestimated the public backlash for disrespecting the Queen.

I think the Windsors have underestimated the public backlash against them IMO. This is the trending topic in Arabic, Spanish, French, and English globally with more than 80% of the pieces sympathetic to the Sussexes.

Honestly, I don't think they've 'bent over backwards'.

They gave them the same wedding they gave Eugenie. Which means it was standard far for a royal.

They gave them a tiny 4-bedroom house when all the Queen's children are living in massive 20-bedroom castles and Will+Kate have 12-bedrooms between their two homes.

They sent them on tours which is good - but that's also work and Meghan was expected to be the most photographed woman in the royal family without the benefit of a permanent hairdresser/makeup artist or personal dresser. Both of which Camilla and Kate have.

The basically gave the Sussexes what was required nothing more when Meghan/Harry are the stars and crowd-drawers of that family whether they like it or not.

Beyond that, they didn't utilize Meghan at all. She gives brilliant speeches, talks, and can host forums. She could have easily been sent to do UN Women talks with Sophie, had some appearances at refugee camps with WHO (as she's done in her past), and opened up diverse media conversations on network talks.

Instead they shamed her and asked her to be quiet.

He is a very minor royal at this point now that William has kids. Equal housing would be to William and Kate, not the parents. Going on tour sounds pretty terrible. Megan is the spouse of a minor royal. She is also a new mom. She is very capable and much more warm and charming or so it appears but she probably doesn't have to follow the rules as closely. Hopefully things will lighten up once the Queen passes but it doesn't look like a great life.

Harry is still 6th in line for the throne and Williams kids are in pre-school. If they want to send Charlotte out to give a talk on the economic impacts of coal mining, by all means. Send her on.

Equal housing or even basic housing wasn't given. With four bedrooms they couldn't even host more than one set of friends or have a live-in nanny. And that's just with one kid. Yes, these are rich people's problems but it shows pettiness that the royal family set them up like this.

Late to this party but is there a theory why they were given so much less? I realize that he isn't the heir but he is farther up the line than most and apparently the second most popular royal per the Today show. Seems like he is a valuable commodity that they should have wanted to keep happy/in the 'firm'.

Honestly, I think William was involved. I can't say he hates Meghan but I also don't think he likes her...at all.

If he intervened, the Queen and her courtiers would be far more likely to not 'upgrade' the Sussexes. Especially since Charles is a pushover.

Ever since they announced the Sussexes were leaving Kensington Palace while Meghan was 8 months pregnant and William didn't say a word, didn't try to get them to stay or light a fire under his courtiers butts and dust off one of the dozens of rooms in the Palace itself for them (they were living in a tiny 2-bedroom cottage!) I figured he was behind it all.

And before someone shouts 'they spent 2 million pounds on Frogmore renovations' - they spent 1 million pounds just on renovating the Kensignton Palace driveway.

2 million is nothing.

PP--thanks. Quick question--Did the Sussexes actually want to leave the Palace? Or was it a case of "since you won't give us a good apartment, just this tiny bungalow, we will have to move out to Windsor?" Also, how often is the Queen actually at Windsor? It seems like she is either at Buckingham palace or up in Sandgriham (spelling?). I think that Windsor was more of a retreat for the royals when traveling was more difficult/slower.

The truth is, the Cambridges did not want their kids exposed to the Sussexes and “their hobbies.” Kicked them out.

Hot yoga at 6am? Begone!

Is PP referring to the rumors of cocaine use?

I wonder if Meghan and Harry were worried that the Queen demand that Archie remain in U.K.? She has legal custody of those minors in direct line for throne, right?

Harry and Meghan using Archie as leverage?

She does indeed. But how far does that go? (I.e. I could see her have custody of George but Archie is so far back in line)

It’s power either way. They were wise to take him off the board.

Archie has never been seen by the public in the UK. He was paraded around with Bishop Tutu in South Africa, but no live events in U.K.

Only photos in U.K. and Canada.

Now THAT is weird.

But they are the ones paying, literally, for it all.

Maybe they will just quietly disappear into their private life. And since I’m not a British taxpayer I don’t really care how their bills are paid.

Can we start a new thread?
I’d love to have a thread just explaining how the royal family works.
Who are these people that are part of the “court”
What do they do?

Trying to distract from Archie?

What's there to distract from? He'll be in his mom's arms by midnight. Meanwhile the Cambridges left George for weeks with the Middletons.

So suck it.

This is a very interesting thread and subject to discuss. Why must you tell people who disagree to suck it? It really diminishes the opinion you provide.

The British press and public have been acting hostile. Why should they get pics?

I couldn't care less what you call him. Diana was still called Princess Diana even after she was stripped of her royal titles (she lost the "HRH" designation and the title "The Princess of Wales.")

The point is that with official royal titles come with royal perks ..... and responsibilities. Harry and Meghan want the trappings, but obviously not the responsibilities. They're in for a rude awakening.

not to mention the fact that they think they can monetize being a royal. Not happening.

Huh? Why don't you go ahead and start a new thread?! Putting your questions in the current thread is going to...keep the discussion in the current thread.
I'd be interested in hearing more about the workings.

They were offered Apartment 1 at KP which is actually slightly larger than 1A where the Cambridge’s live. They DECLINED.

Yep.
