Don't fly United

I just cannot believe that so many of you would be so understanding if this happened to you. Airline wants your seat so they can move a crew to another airport. They say the BEST they can do for you is $800 restricted voucher and a flight out the FOLLOWING afternoon. Most of us would be pissed! Damn a "gracious acceptance." I probably would have de-planed one the police came but I would have been giving the blues to any and every United employee I saw.

My mother is a former gate agent for another airline and she said that in situations like this - people being bumped for crew - they were told to do whatever they could to make it right and they were given carte blanche as to what they could offer. $800 voucher and flight out 24 hours later was not a bona fide offer - hence, why no one took it.

as i said upthread, it's the incompetence of low-cost labor that screwed this one up for United.

It's the systems United had in place that caused this. Those lower level employees weren't the decision-makers.

United finally found a good pr firm, including probably paying a few SAHMs a couple hundred bucks to shill for them. It isn't exactly news that this takes place. Just regard the shilling for what it is and move on.

Nice try, but not going to fly. United called in the goons because Dao wouldn't take their deal. They are responsible. You think United is going to let this go to trial and argue it wasn't them? Not a chance.

Former frequent flyer here. I'm furious about this issue because it could have been me.

The shills just force us to sharpen our arguments. I hope Dao's lawyers find these thread and get some use out of it.

Nice try. Aviation police acting as an agent of United at their direction and instructions on their personal property.

This right here is one very good reason the lawyers filed a motion to preserve evidence. What did the united reps tell the police? Did they say "take this uncooperative, belligerent person off the plane" without explaining more? Was it implied he was a risk, like combative or intoxicated, and need to be removed? It is very likely there are voice recordings from the cockpit, etc that could shed a lot of light like this. United's hands are dirty here, and there's nothing that can make them clean.

It was the management. They imposed artificial limit of $800. You really think this does not happen every week?

Jesus, I just read in the news that the man suffered a broken nose, concussion, and lost his two front teeth.

Can I ask one, maybe dumb question-- but why on earth is there a ceiling on how much an airline can pay someone to be bumped!?

I sympathize. It's just that some of the comments here -- well -- they indicate low-level intellect. That's what you get with a wide-open forum, I guess.
