I see a lot of people say things like "history will be on their side." I 100% agree. but there are times when I question if anyone ever cares about history anymore? that means nothing in America anymore. what a sad and dumb country.

I am a historian (furloughed!) and I had a hard realization about a decade ago that learning more history doesn't actually help you avoid repeating the wrongs of the past if people have bad *values.* Like, if you study the Civil War or WW2 and come out of it still a white supremacist, your horrible morals overruled any lessons you should have taken. Hitler is widely quoted as drawing on the Armenian genocide as an example to follow, for instance.

Why does the federal government need historians? Waste of money if you ask me.

Should this thread be moved. Federal workers no longer have jobs and careers.

Don't worry, I'll probably be fired shortly. Certainly, the Smithsonian Museum of American History, Library of Congress, and National Register of Historic Places don't need historians. There's absolutely nothing historic in the government.

Awesome WH announced construction of the $200 million ballroom will continue during the shut down and American soliders will go without pay.

For the historian: Learning more history does help avoiding the wrongs of the past. The problem is few Americans know history and civics anymore. The most educated didn't vote for this crap.

It’s because of the most educated that America voted for this crap.

At the Smithsonian, I presume. My friend worked at the American History alongside many historians.

Democrats need to end this.
Don’t treat us like political footballs because they can’t win elections.

Those Democrats won elections to get them in the Senate. Republicans refused to negotiate with them. Republicans need to end this. Don’t treat duly elected representatives with utter contempt and expect them to roll over.

It's even worse than you all think.

The Trump budget wants to implement massive cuts to the federal government, far worse than DOGE. Democrats cannot go on record to approve it. Full stop. History will be on their side. A lot of feds are going to get RIF'd before 2026, or now during the shutdown, unless some Republicans manage to get through to the White House than this isn't exactly going to win them votes in the mid-terms. So Democrat feds have nothing to lose by fighting. And Republican feds may also lose their jobs.

The DC area is going to be in a recession by early 2026.

But Trump’s new proposed cuts aren’t in the CR, right? I think the Dems would have been better off saving the shutdown for when congress votes on the actual 2026 budget. It’s going to be a hard sell to do a shutdown again. I almost rather that a few Dems had voted to pass the CR and then they could point to that as a good faith attempt to negotiate one more time. It’s not like republicans are going to give in on extending the subsidies.
