This may the first vote where McCarthy starts losing some of his support. That will be the indicator that he's on his way out. |

| Can we please get a Consensus candidate |
| Wherps. Are we going to try #10? |
|
Yup!
Will this end before 118th round? |
| How come the Senate didn't have this issue but the house does |
If it doesn't they'd better start doing more than 3 votes per day. Get in there at 8am and don't leave before 8pm if they're going to do this nonsense. |
There is no Speaker of the Senate that has to be elected by its members. The VP is automatically President of the Senate. |
You mean the first 8 votes weren't enough? |
It's not about the number of votes. It's about when either McCarthy or his supporters give up and switch to another candidate. Then we'll see if this is just an anti-McCarthy thing, or if they will oppose anyone. |
The Senate doesn’t need a Speaker to function. |

Someone on Wikipedia has made a nice table to track how the votes have shifted with each ballot. They're only recording the anti-voters.

NP here, and I haven't been following this that closely (for shame, especially since I'm a fed! lol)
The Washington Post just announced that Rep. Ted Lieu (D) just voted for Hakeen Jeffries for Speaker. Are the Democrats voting? If so, why don't they just all vote for Jeffries for Speaker? They only need to get a few Rs on their side (which, I know, is pretty much an impossibility). |
The entire House votes, but a winner needs to get 50% of all votes cast in order to win. Usually the votes are along party lines, so it's pretty much a given that the nominee of the majority party will win. Jeffries has consistently been getting 212 votes - every D vote. The problem is that the R vote is split between McCarthy and others, so nobody is getting a true majority. Yes, Jeffries could win if 6 Rs joined his side - but so far none have. |
