Bethesda lacrosse blue vs orange?

We're new here and my DD is trying out, what is the difference between blue vs orange teams? Is one more skilled / competitive?

Bue is the A team. Orange is the B team.

Once you’re assigned to one or the other do you stay on that on for the year, or do they move players up and down a lot?

kids definitely get moved, both ways, up and down..typically not a lot of turnover but kids leave teams, and many just develop at different rates. Each year its different..find out about your classes coach and the team history as much as you cna while doing your research

This is helpful, thanks. My DD hasn’t played lacrosse for very long but she’s very athletic. Her lacrosse skills need a lot of work though, hopefully as she improves she can move up.

What does it mean if your daughter was selected to play on the Orange team of the grade above hers? I assume that is better than playing on the Orange team of her grade but not as good as the Blue team of her grade?

Also - why weren't there tryouts for 8th grade Blue team?

Not familiar with how this club operates, but in general once you get to the 8th grade level many of the area teams are pretty much set with rosters; thus, why they may not hold tryouts. Those clubs that do hold tryouts are more likely looking to only fill several spots and specific positions they feel will improve the team. Once the girls get to 10th grade a lot of times tryouts are limited to invitation-only.

There could be several reasons your DD was asked to play up. Something to consider, when forming 9th grade teams most clubs require players to play with their own age group. This is for college recruiting purposes.

Club B teams can be a bit tricky in that the skill level on the team can vary greatly depending on if the club had enough players to choose from during tryouts. Often times clubs struggle to get enough girls to tryout; thus, almost all make the B team. This results in a wide skill gap. Go with the team you feel aligns best with your DD lacrosse goals. All the best.

Has everyone heard back from this week's BLC girls' tryouts yet? I assume no news is not good news for our DD....

I agree about B teams. Capital B teams are the money grab not real Capital players

although we were originally upset about making the B team as we were hoping for a spot on the A team it does sound like the organization is set up to provide great coaching and player development.

My guess is that they did not get enough players to fill out that Orange team, believed that your DD was not good enough for their grade level Blue team, but was athletic enough to help them fill out a roster spot.

The BLC Orange team is the old Select team. As of last year, Select was not a club team and played against higher bracket rec teams. They seem to have taken Select, slapped a BLC logo on it, and are having them play in NGLL (yet to be seen). Also keep in mind this team is made up of two grade levels, mainly because they aren't able to recruit enough players to fill an entire roster.

I can tell you that almost anyone made the Select team last year. My daughter tried out with a friend who is very non-athletic. No speed, limited skills, etc., and she made the team. My daughter tried out for BLC this year and made the orange team (she declined). This year, they are collecting deposits but making no promises about what the year will look like. They are making no promises about practices or anything...just collecting $600 from everyone with a promise to return it if there is no lacrosse between now and next summer. This is how their letter read:

In this time of continued uncertainty, we recognize that the 2020-2021 season (September through June/early July) is impossible to schedule and predict. As a 501c3, not-for-profit, we develop our budgets based on team expenses. As such, we are requesting that you pay a deposit of $600 to secure your spot on the team. This will be applied to your team fees. Remainder of the team fees will be calculated as soon as we have clarity on the upcoming year.

Note - the team fees will be in the same range as last year for this given team/age group. There will be no refunds or credits issued for withdrawal from BLC during the course of the year. However, in the unlikely event that we cannot have lacrosse through next summer, 2021, the paid deposit will be FULLY refunded to you.

My daughter is on MC Elite and practices start next week (3 times a week) and they have filled rosters for both A and B teams. I don't think BLC Orange is anywhere near where MC Elite B team is...but that is what they are trying to do. For example the MC Elite B team 2026 plays BLC A team in tournaments and in the league.

That may have been the case in the past but the 2026 BLC team has added some great players and with the quality coaching that BLC provides they have a great shot at being a quality team.

Can you comment on the future of the Orange team? Will they be playing? The message from them seems very shakey.

I don't know anything about a 2026 Orange team.... I think they have one for 2025, 2027 and younger but not sure about 2026
