MANY and perhaps even the majority of middle and high school kids are doing fine. But some really are not getting the support they need at home for various reasons -- and many parents are working under various strained circumstances and simply really cannot provide effective support at home. So even though I don't want to send my own kid until everything is absolutely safe, I support hybrid return to school FOR SOME STUDENTS THAT CHOOSE IT, though I think teachers need to be vaccinated first. Your kid's mental health is not more important than a teacher's right to stay alive from a known deadly disease. But once shots are in arms the the 2 week waiting period is past, I think some portion of teachers should return to schools to support some student population. For elementary school that might be most of the kids, just every two days so there can be adequate spacing. For middle and high school this should be an even smaller number of kids in the school. Parents who are doing just fine with kids at home and who aren't comfortable with safety efforts and ventilation and cohorting can keep kids home.

I would hope that by next year, schools really do implement CDC guidance on ventilation and cohorting. But this year I've been convinced by the medical worker parent with two kids, one in middle school, who are having a really rough time. Give these parents some help! Get your shots but help the people with kids who are in trouble who really need it. Some really do. You might be saving a life just like this medical worker does, and not even realize it.

Don’t disagree with any of this. But Gov Northam and APS do not know more than the CDC. So start weekly testing, and fix lunch, or wait on opening middle and high school til cases are lower. We’ve been waiting for real CDC guidance on how to open school

What I'm saying is that if parents choose wisely and only send your kids back if they are really struggling and having issues, then sending kids back actually will be safe for those kids and those teachers. Schools will do what they are going to do, and hopefully at least by the next school year everything will be up to CDC guidelines. But this year, if you feel it is not, for pete's sake keep your kids at home. That increases the chances for everyone who really needs their kids at school, and for our teachers, that everyone will be safe. (I am not a teacher, I'm a parent who will probably be keeping my kids home. But I see that some kids really need to be back and I want everyone to be as safe as possible.)

The way she refused to even entertain sharing how she came to her conclusions was weird. She makes broad, sweeping claims with pretty graphics (because she is a graphic artist) that are designed to make the reader believe the information is backed by solid science. It is not. She is well-intentioned, but a hack. And so many clueless sycophants encourage her to keep producing. She has a history of bullying on other topics in the past - in real life, not saying on social media.

The environment is safe. The academics won't get worked out. They never do. And kids will wear masks. And no, I am not going to freak out if they take them off during lunch. Do you think the schools that are back in person have not been letting kids eat lunch? Or letting the staff or teachers?

YUP.. Do all the smart restart folks and extreme safety advocates actually think other schools around the country have significantly safer conditions? they don't. Many of us are content with masks, distancing and hand-washing. And realize the damage of keeping kids out of school any longer far exceeds the risk of taking off a mask 6 feet away from others to woof down their lunch. Smart restart can advocate all they want, but if APS delays opening any further because of it, there will be an uproad of parents who want/need their kids in school.

Recognize that she refuses to share underlying data and blocks anyone who disgrees with her. It makes it hard to challenge. But go on and view ventilation lady as the one who is being ‘silenced’

I agree. I find it very strange that not only is the graphic artist is getting away with this but that so many are going along with it. There are a few in the group who are getting so much bizarre adulation from the others that it just feeds them to keep going, increasing their perceived self-importance and some people’s paralyzing fear about the pandemic. The whole situation is nuts. It’d make a good research project for a psychology class.

Parents keep posting about the fall and “next year” as if it’s not just 6 months away. APS has had a year to get us back in. What changes do you hope to see over the next months/summer? Are we banking on more people being vaccinated and less community spread? More APS protocols in place? Will be get to 5 days in person at this rate

I’m not giving it a second thought. Just like I didn’t give the Arlington Parents for Education a second thought. (I’m “pro” education, but not at thousands of cases a day with no end in sight.)

None of these groups are official, or represent the vast majority. APS will open. Slowly, safely, according to CDC guidance. No amount of bitching parents, teachers, who never else will change that.

I don’t post much on AEM but when I see her posts it appears that she replies multiple times in a row. Is that just her posting style or does someone potentially have me blocked and I’m not seeing the replies in between LOL! She posts too much info at a time, more summary please. 🤪

I want a new AEM- like it was pre-CoVID. It’s just been reduced to two groups of crazy fighting each other- and I don’t agree with either of them.
