They have school on Saturday? |
Tuesday's weather forecast 44 degrees and rainy |
It's not a matter of whether individual households can dig out starting Sunday. We've been going out every couple of hours to dig out. The real issue is whether Bowser can get it together to plow our roads. Not just the major roads but the smaller sidestreets where a lot of houses like ours reside. I haven't seen a single snowplow go down our street today and the snow is piled high. I really have my doubts that the city will get the roads ready by Wed. |
In DC it's not about the parking lots, it's about the sidewalks and the bus routes. After Snowmageddon, there were giant dunes of snow alongside every street. The dunes made it dangerous for someone, especially a short someone like a child, to walk along the edge of the street because there was no where to go if a car came to close. On the other hand, if you chose the sidewalks, even where they were cleared, you had to climb a small mountain to get to the street to cross. Multiply that by an 8 block walk, and you've got 16 mountains, 16 chances to slip and slide into oncoming traffic. If everything goes well, there will still be several 2 hour delays after schools reopen, so that kids who are walking are doing so in full daylight, without rush hour traffic. My guess for DC is M,T closed, Wed. could go either way, Th/F 2 hour delay. Whatever DC does, MCPS and PGCPS will follow a day later. FCPS will be closed until Feb. |
Apparently Baltimore has already closed for Monday. |
And if memory serves, when Boston got 2+ foot snows last year, pretty much everything shut down. There's a certain amount of snow that cripples pretty much any city. |
I just fell out |
I lived in Boston...schools were closed all the time for weather. I had plenty of snow days where I worked (one of the many colleges). I didn't follow the school's all that closely. I wasn't here during 09-10 so can't compare but the years I have been its been pretty similar. Some days they probably should have called but didn't, other days they called but shouldn't have. Lots of complaining either way. |
Live on Capitol Hill, tried but couldn't open my front door at first!!! Managed to get a broom through a tiny gap and brush snow away so could open it more. 30 minutes later, have no idea what it will be like later with the snow drifts. Agreed Wednesday at at the earliest, anything else would be foolhardy. |
It's not like parents will be rushing into work either!!! there will be a lot of teleworking, and depends a lot on whether metro is up and running at full capacity. It's not just can the schools open the door, there are a lot of other considerations to be made. |
Closed Monday and Tuesday. |
VA schools closed all week. |
You don't even have to say that. FCPS was closed on Thursday, for god's sake. |
At Bowser's presser (just ended) she said they'd have a Monday school decision by tomorrow night (Sunday). |
I saw that too and I just don't even know why they're prolonging it. Just call it: CLOSED. Gimme a break. |
