DCPS is closed tomorrow. Mayor announced about an hour ago. |
In 2010 Snowmaggeddon, the storm ended on Saturday (as predicted this time too) yet the gov't, and schools I think too, were closed through the following Thursday. Snow totals back then were similar to the forecast this time-- 18-25 inches. I'd expect schools and the gov't to be closed at least Monday and Tuesday. |
There were 2 snowstorms then - the first over the weekend and the second on Monday or Tuesday. |
That's the worst possible combination. Sidewalks will be icy even if cleared, and there will be a giant mound of snow on the edge of the road, making walking in the street unsafe. At a minimum there will be 2 hour delays every day so that kids aren't walking in the street at dark or at rush hour. I predict Monday and Tuesday and maybe Wednesday off, then 2 hour delays the rest of the week. |
You were clearly not around for snowmageddon. |
That's right. It was up to my thighs and I have long legs! We were on a small non-through road and didn't get the road cleared for TWO WEEKS. ug ug ug. |
It is supposed to start melting on Sunday. |
Latest models show 30 inches. School's gonna be out all week folks. |
No way. Comparisons to snowmageddon aren't applicable bc this is just one storm. It'll stop snowing sat night and they'll have Sunday to clear the roads. They don't need all the snow to melt whoever said we need 80 degree days. Sheesh.
With no school tomorrow and the gov closing early they can treat the roads too. We're much better prepared this time. I call less than 2' snow and back to school Mon maybe w a delay. |
some are predicting 30+" inches. Clear it all by Monday?!? How long have you lived around here? |
So what kind of "back up childcare" is available for snow days? My backup is... me? |
Looking back on the 2010 Snowmageddon, I remember being able to get out by Tuesday (we are in a development in Falls Church) before the next storm hit. Schools finally opened late on Friday after the second storm, and it was a commuting nightmare, since everyone was so over being cooped up all week.
I'm predicting FCPS will be closed Monday and Tuesday, and delayed opening Wednesday (I hope!!). I would love if we were ready to go on Monday, but that's just not happening here. |
Everyone seems to be forgetting that the problem isn't just the accumulated snow, but the damage from the trees falling and power outages that result from a big accumulation of heavy, wet snow. If we were getting 2 feet of pure powder I'd think we might reopen on Monday afternoon. But imagine parts of the city don't have power -- businesses, hospitals, even some schools -- and traffic is iffy because traffic lights are out and there are downed power lines blocking streets. That's more of the full effect of the previous snowpocalypse that people seem to be forgetting. |
