They don't any more than any other group. This is much more of a class issue than a race issue. If I were you I would let go of the generalizations and stereotypes. They're only hurtful to the many people that do not fit them, but people like you ascribe to them, based on their skin color.

Uhh, you are generalizing about "class" are you not?

I am not the PP referenced but, in my experience, I have to agree that I see many -not all, but most- people with these types of names are african-american. I don't know statistically if this is the case but certainly where I live/work, it is the case. I don't think any parent, african american or not, does their kid a favor by using these silly (in my opinion) names.

I love the name Lyric. It isn't made up or misspelled, and I'm white, have a degree and a job.

Now, Leerik would be another story.

No, I'm not. I just don't believe that being born with a certain skin color makes you more prone to name your kid something that people here are calling stupid. I would take the time to go into much further detail as to why your thinking is hurtful and misguided, but I'm sure it wouldn't make a difference. You would still walk around believing "most" African Americans name their kids these types of names. And I will chalk it up to another example of why it sucks to be one of the few AA's on this board. Nobody gets up in arms when people start throwing around stereotypes. They think it's amusing and entertaining.

No it's not made up, but the parents named their deaf child Lyric. I however don't like the name and decided to name my child Words instead.

its simply a matter of statistics. for some reason (racism? broken families? poor education? failing inner cities) contemporary african american culture is almost broken. compare the education, crime and unemployment rates with other minorities and even african immigrants. Let's get our heads out of the sand (I am black too) and try to find a way to fix the problem. the name thing is silly, but certainly these moms are not doing their kids any favors.

I didn't say some people don't do this. Obviously some do. My problem is with the belief that you're more prone to if your skin is a certain color and people saying that "most" AA's do this. That is not true. There is no way you can lump and entire race of people in the US and say most of them this and not be wrong. And it perpetuates the idea that you can look at my skin color and know certain things about me based on that. This is where it is hurtful and wrong to do this. People are products of their environment and upbringing. And lots of those people turn out the way they are in spite of their environment and upbringing. They do not come out a certain way because their skin is a certain color.

I'm not saying people with dark skin are "prone to" giving their kids names like what we've been discussing. I'm saying that almost all -if not all- people I know with names like we are discussing are African American. Where I grew up and where I work, I have many friends/colleagues who are AA with these types of names. My workplace is probably majority AA. It's just the way it is. That is not to say all AA people use these names. Sorry if you don't like the observations. And regardless if you are AA or white or whatever, I still think you're not doing your kid any favors by picking a name like this.

These may or may not be urban legands. I'm attaching the Snopes link. My favorite, which I heard multiple times before actually snoping, is the twins with the names pronounced "le-MON-juh-lo" and "or-AN-juh-lo", AKA lemon jello and orange jello.

Forget the snopes legend. A cousin working as a substitute teacher in Cleveland had a Shithead in one of her classes. I know there is at least one girl (woman now) with that name.

My cousin was an ER doctor in Philadelphia and treated a 5 year old boy named Shithead. Lest we think he was pulling our leg, he pocketed the bracelet when he cut it off at discharge. I seen it with my own eyes!

Are you from Brazil, by any chance?

Freakonomics did a pretty thorough analysis of African American naming trends, and yes, by the numbers, single african american mothers are more likely to give their children made up names.

Of course, now it's becoming a lower-class white thing to re-spell names that were re-purposed in the last decade. Taylor (used to be a family name), then became a girl's name, then became Teighlor or something equally heinous. Or Ashley, used to be a boy's name, then became a girl's name, then became Ashleigh.
