Classes will gather at the National Mall for an outdoor exploration and then the class will enter the museum for a closer look at an object. Meet Ups mission is to create an atmosphere of lifelong learning. Families are invited to spend time together exploring a topic inspired by the Smithsonian's collections. Different activities are available for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and early elementary aged children. Each Meet Up will focus on a specific artwork or object and a related topic. Play stations will be available for the hour, and an educator-led experience, centered around the object, will take place inside a museum. Explore, wonder, observe, and learn! Learn about the various ways that seeds disperse and populate the Earth. Discover how bees, bats, and beetles pollinate plants to make seeds. Plant a seed to take home with you and watch it grow!

Children will discover how ocean animals visit “cleaning stations” at coral reefs, where cleaner fish and shrimp help remove parasites in exchange for a meal, teaching the golden rule: Don’t Eat the Cleaners! Susan will guide young attendees as “picture detectives” to explore the transformation of her illustrations, inspiring them to create their own books. Throughout the event, museum educators will lead hands-on activities in the exhibit. Families are welcome to join at any time and stay as long as they like. Scheduled reading times with Susan Stockdale are at 10:45 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. Following the readings, Susan will be available for a book signing in the Explorer Theater.
