Back to the issue here..... |
OP here - that you all for your great posts.
Mine - agencies that advocate nannies - educate the parents on what is unacceptable and educate them on fair pay practices & live in conditions. Protect nannies who do travel world (yes I have done lots of that as a nanny) and have systems in place where they can vet the agency they work for as well as be meeted at the airport an given a greeting on arrival to that country Discrimination against nannies/maids & domestic labour through medical testing - compulsory HIV testing, TB, Full bloods when working in Arab/Russian & a few asian countries. Whilst the families health remains a mystery. Laws against placing children (as in the Sri Lankan girl) in roles beyond their years or responsibility with no training - families getting away with murder to get cheap immigrant labour and not being held accountable for recklessness of child labour Nanny org & union that is an advocate for nannies not for the parents whinning whims. |
No, my point is that those who state nannies have no rights are blatantly incorrect. As for LI nannies, they must be paid for every hour worked, and yes, in some states they also are guaranteed OT. If you wish to start a movement to guarantee OT pay for all LI nannies in all states, let me know how to join you. IMO, concentrating on making sure the rights we already have are enforced is a higher priority. IOW, a LI nanny who is not even getting paid for all hours worked needs support getting that existing right enforced. Then she might choose to rally behind OT. |
How is a nanny union going to solve these issues, particularly those problems that occur outside the US?
Will all nannies be forced to join the union and made to pay high yearly dues so that the union can pay high end lobbyists to advocate that the rights we already have be enforced and that more rights be created? Do you believe nannies should have more and better rights than any other hourly worker in the US? If so, how do you plan to have those rights enforced when the rights we already have a either not know ignored? And what do you think will happen when the nanny union decides that nannies are entitled to leave their workplaces for 30 minute breaks every 4 hours? Will legislatures actually put that sort of insanity into law? If so, how many employers do you think will drop their nannies like a hot potato in favor of daycare of some kind? |
All us nannies need to assert ourselves more on the job.
Let's face it, families are desperate for childcare and if we say no more often eventually they are going to runout of nannies to hire after they've fired us all. If we are all saying no more often to unreasonable requests that is a great start to assert our rights. All this abuse carries on because we let them walk all over us because we are afraid to lose our jobs. I propose that this week we all say the word "NO" at least once in our job. |
Interestingly most of those countries like Saudi/UAE & Russia pay very well for English Speaking nannies. I can't say the same about immigrant labour there as I don't know much about it - I would say they verge on slavery?
The saudi royal family are always advertising for English nannies but because you have to pass a barage of medical tests before you even get a job offer I am unsure how many girls are rushing off to fill those positions. same in Russia - great money to be made but lots of obstacles to getting there in first place. |
p.s
I also wonder about Nanny Cams. Are they legal? In what other professions are you spied on by your employers? Maybe a security guard? |
Which poster said that "nannies have no rights"? |
And if the nanny loses her job, will you then reveal your true identity or just hide behind Anonymous? |
Anyone? |
I'm going to do it = my job is not worth having anyway - who knows maybe saying no once in a while might make it better and i'll want to stay. I'll keep you posted. |
I live in the middle east - Dubai and I am a nanny here (for a UK/Canaidan family). I had to get tests to get my visa - but so Did my bosses (who don't work as nannies or maids), and as do everyone who wants a working visa. Its not just nannies and maids that have to undergo TB and HIV tests. Also when I worked in America in 2012, to get my working visa I had to prove my imunisation records and have a TB test - its not just Arab, Russian and Asian countries that require tests the USA does too. I agree that agencies should advocate for their nannies. Also in the UK, NZ and Australia, and Europe (and Dubai) the contracts are enforceable. My contract is a legally binding document that can be enforced by a court of law. |
I agree that a TB test is reasonable. -Nanny |
This is a terrible idea. Families are not desperate for nannies. There are more nannies than jobs. If you're job isn't worth having, than quit. |
Your standards are apparently shamefully low. If there was a glut of good nannies, you would not be having so many problems on this board. |
