Junk Food Nanny RSS feed

How is this different than parents asking a nanny to dress a certain way? I am a nanny and I just don't see the problem. If that's there "house rules" go with it..if you like your job and are compensated well. I just don't see the problem..it is a lot of junk food and I can see the moms point. If you absolutely have to have it during the day I would be discreet. I do think the mom should offer that you help yourself to the fruit bowl etc. maybe you could bring a sandwich and thy could have snacks for you.

I agree that this employer is a control freak. It is not about her agenda about healthy eating. It is more about what she is willing to tolerate and not tolerate.

I have seen many different nannies at the park. Some have dyed purple hair. Some have tattoos while others have facial piercings.
I have heard comments from other nannies there that a responsible and mature nanny would have enough common sense to not maintain this type of appearance around children since young children are so impressionable, etc.

The same thing w/diet. All of you posters are in the mind~set that this nanny should just "know better" just as a nanny should "know better" than to show up at work w/pink hair and a tongue ring. WTF??

People are so different and have many variations of what is acceptable and what is not.
Lines need to be drawn in the sand for many of these "gray areas." Diet is one of them.

WHAT? I'm a nanny and I have my nose pierced and tattoos. How on earth is this in any way related to having an unhealthy attitude about health, nutrition or kindness towards the Earth? I'm a college educated "super nanny" (proclaimed by my charges) with 10 + years of experience with children. Yet I should "know better"? What do you mean by that? Sorry but my appearance is my personal decision and is pretty reflective of the time we are living in and how I want to look. You're assumptions are outdated, prejudice, and flat out wrong. My appearance is not hurting anyone or anything so do not compare this to OP's original question. P.s- I'm a vegan and very environmentally conscious so enjoy that tidbit.

If you are piercing your face and getting inked, then how dare you judge another nanny who eats foods you deem unhealthy?

I think a nanny with unusual piercings and tattoos is a lot worse than one who eats junk food.
With your appearance, many childcare centers wouldn't even hire you no matter how qualified you were.

It is common sense to not work w/children if you have facial piercings and multiple tattoos.

For example, I work at Disneyland in CA and our dress code is very strict in that since we are a family environment us employees cannot have facial piercings (females can have pierced ears only) and if we sport any tattoos, they must be hidden from view.
This is common sense.

All national amusement parks are very strict on this.
Even our local zoo won't look at your resume if you are inked on your lower arms, neck, lower legs or face.

Duh.

I agree.

If you have tramp stamps on your body...I mean, tattoos and piercings, then the nanny profession is not for you.

No matter how many ECE units you had, I would NEVER hire you to work at my preschool.

Just common sense.

Guess what, most of us wouldn't apply to work for your preschool; people generally don't seek out employment that discriminates against them. I have Masters in ECE and social work, teach at one of the best schools in my state, and have full tattoo sleeves and a nose piercing. Guess who at my school gives a s***, no one. Perhaps if you can't refrain from being judgmental, then the child care profession is not, in fact, for YOU.

Wow! Just Wow!! All of this is up to parents! Yes, the parents employ us as nannys and it is their call the influences they want around their children. I completely see where a parent is coming from and as a parent, I would not want a nanny to have jump food around my children. I am a career nanny by day and work in the marketing field part time. I have my BA and am very close to my Masters. My Eployers love me and the children in my care adore me. I am a great nanny who has traveled the world working in orphanages and caring for children. Ad guess what? I have tattoos! Wow. Just wow.

"All of this" is not only up to parents but to ANY employer. If you walk into any job interview looking/acting different than the norm, you will have to overcome that initial perception with stellar qualifications. Even then, the interviewer might decide it is too risky to hire you. You will probably be told the standard reasons about other candidates' qualifications having a better fit with the position.

That was exactly my point.... But for some to say someone with tattoo's should not nanny blew my mind...

I would never hire a nanny who had multiple tattoos. One or two small ones would be fine, but if she had one on her face or her arms and legs were covered with them, that would be just too much.

Regarding piercings, a nose ring would be okay, but if her tongue, lip or cheek were pierced I would not even consider her.

In the corporate world, there are certain dress/grooming codes that need to be followed.
Why should the nanny profession be anything different?
If you are to work around young children, one should always maintain a professional and clean appearance.

Overkilling on tattoos and facial piercings just shows that you don't value what you do or those you work for. Plain + simple.

Totally ditto!!! I am the Director of Sales and Marketing for a large business firm on the west coast and am proud to say I have many tattoos which have never been an issue in the corporate world. I am valued for my brain and work value, not the ink on my body! It's really no big deal....
