Hiring a nanny who smokes RSS feed

No, I would not hire a smoker. Shows poor judgment.

This. I'm an ICU nurse. Smoking kills and the death is not pretty. Watching people get holes in their throats, lungs removed, etc... is just awful. I know how high the stakes are as a healthcare professional and could not imagine leaving my child with someone crazy enough to subject herself to such a horrible future.
You say you are a nurse-have you treated or seen a cancer patient who never smoked? Just curious.

ICU nurse here. I've been in the field for 10 years and have taken care of many many different types of patients. Some have had all types of cancers. Again, the end stage where you're watching them rot is beyond gut-wrenching. Smoking increases ones likelihood of experiencing this 100 fold. Because smokers aren't exposed to the consequences of their smoking until it's too late, you hear smoker-defenders playing skeptic all of the time, or implying that it can't be that bad, maybe the people didn't smoke, etc... Believe me, you people are a dime a dozen. It'll just be sad to take care of you when you're dying and alone- yes, families abandon the dying smoker as well. Because cancers caused by smoking can be avoided and people chose to smoke anyway, families are angry at the smoker who chose smoking over them. So, smokers have to deal with dying and abandonment all at the same time. It's terrible to be with them. To the extent that smokers try to pretend that cancers are largely attributed to other factors and that many cancer-sufferers never smoked, smoking is self-reported by the patient upon intake. All a smoker has to is say I wasn't a smoker when they enter the hospital. This happens all of the time. Because smokers face discrimination in the hospital- who the hell wants to give top notch care to a smoker who took their own life in their hands when there are plenty of innocent people who deserve top-notch care- people lie all of the time. I can't tell you how many obvious smokers said they weren't, only to have a family or friend say that the person smoked for 20 or 30 pack years. Bottom-line, smoking is ensuring each day that you get closer and closer to cancer on purpose. Yes, it's a death wish. I wouldn't want someone like that to take care of my child. Period.

Wow, I hope you are not a nurse, and if you are, I hope you lose your job. The job is to give top notch care to all, no matter what disease brings someone into an ICU. Period.

You are an awful person, and no, I'm not a smoker.
+1 (non-smoker here as well).

Why do angry smokers mad at healthcare people telling the truth think they should take care of kids? I think that's awful. One thing is for certain, smoking is so addictive you'll find people will defend it to the absolute death literally. What a terrible shame.
Not everyone replying here is an "angry smoker". Some are just appalled that a health care professional would pick and choose who is most worthy of care based on her own prejudices.

+1 these types of people (+ overweight people) who see nothing wrong with doing what makes them happy at the expense of others and the taxpayers really aren't fit to be the moral guides for children.

What's appalling is that healthcare professionals are diced to pick and chose because they're short-staffed and the public is unaware. If there's an obese smoker who needs ICU care and that same nurse has a random post-surgical patient in need of care and both patients have needs simultaneously, the non- obese non-smoker will get the care first. Nurses feel awful about this, but again the public is unaware of the real crisis in healthcare. It's collapsing. Whatever someone can do to lower her chances of needing to engage the system, she should do.

Absolutely sister. Haters make the best moral guides for children. Everyone knows that.

I stand by everything else I said. If you were a nurse worth anything you'd know that you never know enough about a patient's history to know if they "put themselves there." I've had two brain tumors so I've spent a lot of time with nurses and know exactly what kind you are. And I know you do too, despite your protestations.
I think you're "brain rumors" did more damage than you're aware.

If you are going to insult someone's intelligence at least TRY to use correct grammar.

^^ Smoker defender and (inept) grammar police. So long as you're not a parent!

This! I also don't want recreational druggies, and people tatted/pierced from Heath to toe. My kids, my choice. Go eff someone else's kids up.
Anonymous
You're damn right PP. You don't need some damn druggie effing your kids up-they already have you.

PS-I know you're trolling 12:48, I'm just having some fun with it.

I want someone with high moral character and good judgement taking care of my kids.

I think smokers have neither.

Too late.

I would not hire someone who smelled like smoke, even if they weren't a smoker. So if the nanny is an occasional smoker, but manages to come to work without smelling like cigarettes, them I would have no way of knowing the nanny smoked.

Wow.

Did you really just say that to me? You have no idea how much damage they have done. I sincerely hope you are just a troll and not an ICU nurse troll. What a cruel thing to say; I've only finished radiation a week ago but it's fair to say that two surgeries and radiation HAVE taken their toll. Feeling better now?
