Hiring a nanny who smokes RSS feed

Third hand smoke, including residual smoke on the nanny's clothes or in her hair, can be harmful to children. The American Academy of Pediatrics specifically advises against hiring smokers to care for children because children can ingest harmful tobacco smoke residue if they touch the caregiver's clothes then touch their mouths.

My nanny smokes, which I didn't realize until about a year in. She smelled like smoke a few times and then I found a receipt laying on the kitchen counter, so that confirmed it.

I loathe cigarette smoke and actually think less of people who choose to smoke. But she's a great nanny so I'm overlooking it. She doesn't smoke during the day or at least never in my kids' presence. I know this for certain because my oldest is fascinated by cigarettes and the "no smoking" signs, so if she had ever seen it, I would hear about it.

I am a nanny and I smoke. But, and its a big but here, I smoke in the morning then take a shower and get dressed for work, I do not smoke in my car at all, or even bring cigs and lighter in my purse, and I don't smoke while at work or on breaks from work. Once my work clothes are on, no smoking. Evenings and weekends are my own time and I will smoke then. Again though, not in my car. I am an amazing nanny and have been for 10 years. I would never smoke around the children or anywhere that they could smell it. If you set guidelines, its fine in my opinion.

For nannies who say they don't smoke around the kids and during the day and on the clock, and not once their clothes are on so they don't smell like second hand smoke, why smoke at all? Serious question.

Because in spite of the favorite hobby of some posters here who love to claim that smokers ipso facto have zero self-control, that simply isn't true.

I smoke. I am a nanny who never smokes around the kids or during the day on the clock or once I get dressed for the day, but I still smoke the rest of my life because I enjoy it. Yes, that's right, what some posters love to call a nasty, horrible habit is one that I enjoy. I don't care if it might cause cancer, if it is expensive, if it is disgusting to others. I enjoy it and have no desire or plans to quit.

Wrap your head around that one.

I can wrap my head around lying on the internet so honestly your trolling won't work. I've never met anyone that doesn't say they want to quit or is actively "trying" to quit. No one enjoys addiction and a death sentence and being judged by everyone they pass as smelling like crap and having no will power or self respect.

My boyfriend smokes 1-2 cigarettes a day and has no desire to quit, PP. You are really rude and judgmental.

I'm not an idiot, I know its bad for me...along with about a million other things. Yes I enjoy smoking , am otherwise healthy (I run at least 10 miles a day) and it does not negatively affect anyone besides myself. How is self control an issue when I am actively choosing to do something?
People need to lay off the judgement.

Wow, you're kind of an idiot. I think I was about 6 years old when I realized that people existed even if I had never met them.

Yep! Just got back. Now I'm enjoying a cigarette AND a glass of wine. Try getting off your high horse and enjoying your own life instead of anonymously bashing others who actually do.

I am a nanny, I would say no.

Unless of course, she comes in and doesn't smell of smoke. If I can't tell she smokes, I wouldn't care. The issue with smoking, is the smell travels. She could only smoke outside, and she would still smell of cigarette smoke.

It has nothing to do with character, and all to do with my allergies.
