Hiring a nanny who smokes RSS feed

I've never met a smoker who didn't smell, so no to the nanny. Unless you smoke one cigarette a month, there will be residual smell of smoke. My father is a lifelong smoker. Let me tell you, I can tell how long ago he left the room when I enter that room. I can tell how long ago he used the bathroom when I go use it. They smell, their body fluids smell, their clothes, hair, sweat, everything. Perhaps there are smokers out there who never carry a molecule of smell around them but I never met one.

You do realize that you have absolutely no way of knowing this without asking each and every non-smelling person you encounter if they are a smoker or not. I know it's fun to bash smokers but try not to be so stupid about it.

This. I'm an ICU nurse. Smoking kills and the death is not pretty. Watching people get holes in their throats, lungs removed, etc... is just awful. I know how high the stakes are as a healthcare professional and could not imagine leaving my child with someone crazy enough to subject herself to such a horrible future.

You say you are a nurse-have you treated or seen a cancer patient who never smoked? Just curious.

ICU nurse here. I've been in the field for 10 years and have taken care of many many different types of patients. Some have had all types of cancers. Again, the end stage where you're watching them rot is beyond gut-wrenching. Smoking increases ones likelihood of experiencing this 100 fold. Because smokers aren't exposed to the consequences of their smoking until it's too late, you hear smoker-defenders playing skeptic all of the time, or implying that it can't be that bad, maybe the people didn't smoke, etc... Believe me, you people are a dime a dozen. It'll just be sad to take care of you when you're dying and alone- yes, families abandon the dying smoker as well. Because cancers caused by smoking can be avoided and people chose to smoke anyway, families are angry at the smoker who chose smoking over them. So, smokers have to deal with dying and abandonment all at the same time. It's terrible to be with them. To the extent that smokers try to pretend that cancers are largely attributed to other factors and that many cancer-sufferers never smoked, smoking is self-reported by the patient upon intake. All a smoker has to is say I wasn't a smoker when they enter the hospital. This happens all of the time. Because smokers face discrimination in the hospital- who the hell wants to give top notch care to a smoker who took their own life in their hands when there are plenty of innocent people who deserve top-notch care- people lie all of the time. I can't tell you how many obvious smokers said they weren't, only to have a family or friend say that the person smoked for 20 or 30 pack years. Bottom-line, smoking is ensuring each day that you get closer and closer to cancer on purpose. Yes, it's a death wish. I wouldn't want someone like that to take care of my child. Period.

Wow PP. I'm not a smoker but that was so callous I have to hope you're never my nurse...although come to think of it, I did have some evil nurses in the ICU. Maybe we've met.

Anyway, three of my grandparents died from smoking related cancers and I can assure you none of us abandoned or judged them at the end of their lives. Not everyone is as hateful as you suggest.

ICU nurse again. You're probably a smoker, so I wouldn't want to be your nurse. Win-win. Healthcare is stretched so thin that often times we are forced to ration out care. Now, that's callous, but it is what it is. That being the case is like to provide care for people who are there of no fault of their own. IMO smoking puts people there, so I'd rather give my care to someone else. BTW- we nurses all say that. It's a terrible reality, but reality nonetheless. Secondly, I've been voted top ICU nurse for my unit twice in five years. I'm not hurting for affirmation. Truth is I'm a compassionate competent nurse and provide the most excellent care I can to all sorts of people- rapists, drug dealers, smokers, nurses, nuns whoever. That's what a nurse does. Doesn't take away from the stress and strain of smokers on the system and, worse, on themselves. Again, they choosing to put themselves on a very painful course towards death. It's no fun watching people get poked and prodded while they struggle to breathe and then die. It's so awful that I have to be forceful about. Laymen just don't get it. Anyways, it's shows such a callous disregard for one's well being that I would not want a smoker providing childcare.

I did actually say I am not a smoker. Wouldn't you think seeing three grandparents die of lung/jaw (chewing tobacco) cancer would be reason enough not to smoke? Or are you accusing me of lying about that?

I stand by everything else I said. If you were a nurse worth anything you'd know that you never know enough about a patient's history to know if they "put themselves there." I've had two brain tumors so I've spent a lot of time with nurses and know exactly what kind you are. And I know you do too, despite your protestations.

I have to agree with the PP. You sound more like a witch then a nurse and I wouldn't want you treating me even if you couldn't blame me for being sick.

You angry smokers need to find other jobs than caring for kids. There's plenty of people who care about their health to take care of kids. Why do angry smokers mad at healthcare people telling the truth think they should take care of kids? I think that's awful. One thing is for certain, smoking is so addictive you'll find people will defend it to the absolute death literally. What a terrible shame.

You sound like a witch defending people dying awful deaths unnecessarily because smoking is so important. You're disgusting and hopefully not a parent!

I think you're "brain rumors" did more damage than you're aware.

Wow, I hope you are not a nurse, and if you are, I hope you lose your job. The job is to give top notch care to all, no matter what disease brings someone into an ICU. Period.

You are an awful person, and no, I'm not a smoker.
