FTM seeking advice on hiring a nanny

OP, don't let the negativity scare you. We had a young, tech savvy nanny, and paid much less than you are offering (would gladly pay more, but could not). Can you make a shelf in the fridge that is off limits for everyone else? I asked the nanny to bring her own lunch and take any snacks she wanted, but she rarely did without additional prompting. She was also very diligent and used her tablet and cell phone only during DC's nap time. Stayed with us for several years, then moved to an office job, but remains a close friend. GL!

OP here and thank you for your suggestions and clarifications. It has been a great help to me.

As I wrote (clearly) a nanny's cell phone use while the baby is awake or sleeping outside her crib will not be tolerated/allowed during the nanny's woking hours. So I don't care to discuss that anymore. If you are so addicted to your phone you simply will not be working for me - not the end of the world for either of us so that is a dead issue.

Why because I send a text every morning around 9 am to my mother letting her know I'm alive. I work 24 hours a day up to 3 weeks at a time. If I can't send 1 or 2 texts in a 24 hr period I could never work for you.

Cell phones, texting are a normal part of everyday life. Get used to it and you are ridiculous to say a child could be killed if a nanny texts. You cannot stop texting.

Yes you can. I am a nanny and I have never once texted anyone in the 15 years I have been working. I accept and make calls to my employers and no one else during business hours. You are clearly have a problem if you think it is impossible to keep your mind and eyes on your charges at all times.

For $22 an hour plus overtime, healthcare and three weeks paid vacation? I seriously doubt she will have a problem getting and keeping a great nanny.

What do you do when your charges friends parent calls or texts you about a play date ? What If music class gets cancelled and you don't get the call, email or text? What about school closures, a child getting sick or hurt at school or a friends home ? I have gotten so many of these calls, texts and emails over the years. I also need my smart phone to do my job to check my email and for gps. I've had older charges go home on the bus with friends who then I need to go pick up and on the fly I need to use my phone to find the house. So many situations. Yes these are all work situations but it can add up to a lot of phone use. None of it personal. But you say you won't do that, you only make and receive calls from your employers.

Stop your nonsense. First, OP's child is a newborn and not apt to get many play-date invitations until he can hold up his own head. And second, you can make all those many work calls on your lunch break. There rest of your post is total nonsense.

I'm not talking about op I'm responding to the nanny who in 15 years has never once texted while working and only makes or receives calls from her employers.

I'm a nanny I don't get a lunch break, or any break while I work. If the school calls or a parent calls who has my charge on a play date I amswer my phone. Anything else would he neglect in my eyes. What if my charge broke his arm at school? I wait to call the school back during a none existed lunch break? My points are valid. As a nanny I put my charges first I would never neglect them when they are not in my care but I'm the one in charge. Which happens daily with children who go to school. I'm the latest link and I take that seriously.
