So do you all check your housekeeper's credit?

Or the plumber?
Or the cable guy?
Or the electrician?
Or the gardener?
Or the carpet cleaners?
Or the painters?
Or the dog walker?
Or the alarm guy?

Most likely the answer is no to all of these but yes to the nanny.
Ridiculous. These people have as much of an opportunity to steal.

Do you let the plumber, cable guy, gardner, etc walk around your house unattended for 10 hours? All these things the people either stay outside or you watch them work inside and they stay in a small area. None of these are anything like a nanny.

Checking someone's criminal history is perfectly adequate. Credit scores are such a scam - if you pay in cash for everything or pay off your credit cards without interest every month you gain no positive credit. It tells you nothing whatsoever about the likelihood someone will steal.

I have excellent credit but I don't let employers run it. They can easily see I have a clean criminal background and zero driving offenses, not to mention my references. If that isn't enough to convince you to trust me not to steal from your home it wasn't going to work out anyway.

I guess I could have cheated and stolen to pay my bills on time but that's not the kind of person I am. I wouldn't agree to a credit check. It's none of their business and I wouldn't want to work for a family who used that to judge me.

While you may think you are a good person, why did you take out credit, loans, or sign up for services that you couldn't afford?

I took out loans to put myself through grad school. I was young and dumb and also depended on credit cards to help me with my bills while I student taught and wasn't getting a paycheck. When I graduated I didn't find a teaching job for 2 years and worked as an aide. So yes, I was ignorant and should have been more responsible about my finances but it was several years ago and it certainly doesn't make me a bad person. I haven't even used a credit card in 4 years but it's still going to take some time to get out of the hole.

It must be nice to have never made mistakes in your life.

If you have nothing to hide and you want the job I see no problem in giving them a credit report. You already need to give them your social to withhold taxes.

So you think someone with good credit wouldn't steal?

People with good credit are generally respectful and honorable people. People with bad credit are the ones lacking the moral compass to pay back loans and credit. I would trust someone with a good credit history to honor agreements, provide notice when quitting, be on-time, and yes, not steal. Sure, people can have a great credit history and then be bad people. Anyone anywhere doing anything can be a bad person, but I think a credit check is a good tool to use in this situation along with an in person interview.

As someone who struggled with finances in their early 20s (due to many factors outside of my control) and now has shit credit which I am working to rebuild as a result, f***you.
Your moral compas is seriously flawed.

How are your finances outside of your control? The only reason to have bad credit is because of identity theft, and even then you should get it sorted out within a year.

You are so fucking naive. There are lots of reasons a good and moral person can end up struggling to pay your bills and with bad credit. Have you ever been so broke that you had to choose which bills to pay and which to let go? You ever been a struggling 20 something trying your damnedest to make it through school? Its just not as cut and dry as you make it out to be, and that's why fool's like you have no business with anyone's credit report.

If I was so broke I couldn't pay the bills I would stop incurring more bills. THAT is what seeing your credit report lets me know. If you lose your job you need to cancel your cable, internet, etc. move back in with mom and dad, sell your car, etc. The problem is people don't do that, they just think "meh, oh well, lost my job so I'll just sit here with my iPhone and $100 a month cable and chill until they shut them off"

You have no idea what you are talking about and it is so obvious that you've never been broke in your life.
Not everyone can move in with mom and dad. Cable is generally the first thing to go. Selling a vehicle that you need to drive to interviews/jobs is assinine.
I'd love to see you jobless with very few resources and nobody to turn to for help. I'll bet your credit would be gutted.
Clueless people have the answers to everything.

Exactly. How easy to be so judgmental when you've never walked in someone's shoes. Not everyone with bad credit is some deadbeat who blew all her money on iphones and vacations.

When interviewing nannies wouldn't you rather pick someone that hasn't had a life full of mistakes and bad judgement?

Going to grad school and then struggling to find a job are mistakes? Bad judgement?

We'll agree to disagree. I admit that I made some bad decisions when I was 23 but luckily I've grown and learned from them. I am proud of the person I've become and fortunately I've had amazing nanny jobs with people who didn't care about my credit score. To each their own.

I have no problem with NFs checking my credit. But that is because I have a credit score of over 825. I'm DAMN proud of it. I had a credit score of about 600/650 3 years ago and have done my damnedest to improve the score. It has been a tough time but I am now in a spot I can work and save (like really save money) and go on trips and adventures.
I also save for the unknown. I have this job contracted for 2 more years. But then what. I don't want to be unable to pay my bills because I'm out of work. (Which by the way I am ahead on most bills- mobile they owe me $1000 cause I over pay each month, my car I am 1 year ahead on payments, my internet and cable they owe me $800, my credit cards I pay every Monday and if they let me pay extra, I do. I never leave a balance).
I've been out of work, I've struggled. It sucks and I will never do that again.

This is the type of nanny that will easily get high paying jobs with respectful families. The rest of you bitter, petty, immature nannies with horrible credit and questionable morals will be on here in a month or two posting about your MBs hating you or not being able to get good references.

I'm the poster in debt because of grad school. Could I have made different decisions? Of course. I did what I thought was best at the time and it ended up not working out for me. There's always going to be someone who wants to judge me or say they would have done better. That's fine. I don't get a redo. I just go up from here and believe me, it's all made me smarter and stronger. I'll never apologize for that.

That is absolute nonsense. I have a high paying job with a respectful family, an MB (and several before her) who adores me and countless glowing references and There is now way I'd allow you to access my credit report.
As for the nanny you are referencing above...don't believe everything you read.

I'm the first poster on here.

Funny how it's so easy for people to believe and feel sorry for someone with bad credit. Oh of course why would someone have a hold of their lives. That's just ridiculous. So unfathomable that a nanny can be in a good place in life.
