Is This Too Much to Ask - Immunizations. RSS feed

Is it unreasonable/reasonable to ask the nanny candidate to get or show proof of the following vaccines: Flu, whooping cough, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, tuberculosis, and meningitis. If she can’t track it down that she received them, we ask her to get a titer ( blood test) to see if any of this is present on her symptoms. We offered a annny we like position, and she shot it down. She said she was only ever asked to provide Flu, whooping cough, and sometimes Tuberculosis. She doesn’t know if she can track all of the paperwork down for proof, and is only willing to do the titer test if we pay to reimburse her. We are unwilling to do that, because we both would not have a company pay for those things if we are required to have them. Am I asking too much?

Yes. Honestly, if she has flu and whooping cough immunizations she’s certainly up to date on everything else. And if a company required a drug test as a condition of employment, they certainly wouldn’t require the candidate to pay for it out of pocket.

I concur w/the above poster.

That is a LONG list that you have there!

And I think it would be your responsibility to foot the bill for her since you are the one requesting a titer test.

If it's a requirement of the job then you need to pay for the proof and all the immunization. You're unreasonable. If you want all that, then you pay lady.

You sound like a nightmare. Hope nanny finds s better gig!

You need to pay for the titer. Like a PP mentioned above, you wouldn’t pay for a drug test would you? Before nannying, I worked at a center where they had a health center and provided nurses who could give us all the shots/tests we needed. We never had to pay out of pocket.

I've never been asked to get any vaccines, ever. But if I was I wouldn't pay for them. I would find another job.

My current MB asked if I had my flu shot and TB in the last year. I had so I said say and that was the end of that. However, if you want this nanny to go the extra mile and get a titer you need to pay for it. I wouldn’t have taken to job either if I was her.

Wow, +1 to all the previous posters! You can’t just demand all that and make her pay for it. What the hell?

It’s totally understandable to want a healthy, immunized nanny taking care of your kids, but you’re kind of going about it the wrong way. If you really like her, and you need that test, then I’m sorry to say that you’re gonna have to reimburse her.

Yes.

I know I got the MMR for example, in the fall of 1994. At my pediatrician's office. Where they since lost all their records. So I can't prove it. But yes, you need to pay to the titer test.

Op here. We are on a tight budget, and having to pay for that seems ridiculous. The nanny should take care of her own health and provide that. When I went into nursing school, I had to get a lost immunizations that I had to pay for out of pocket. I don’t think asking her to pay for it is that unreasonable.

Op, how does she not have proof/keep track? I have 2 immunization cards and I get them filled out every time I get a vaccine. I still have the ones that I got when I was born and I have all my vaccines stamped and dated. Is she foreign born? Or did she lose the documentation? Personally, I think you should pay for them. It isn’t her problem if you’re on a right budget. If you don’t want to pay for them then find someone who has proof already.

Why the hell did you even ask if you’re being unreasonable if you weren’t going to listen when literally everyone is telling you that you are?

Yes, you’re right. It’s totally ridiculous to pay for something you are requiring.

Honestly, can you even afford a nanny? Having a tight budget is not conducive to hiring one. I really hope this nanny is smart enough to bail now. It doesn’t sound like you’re an employer somebody would be happy working for. You seem like the type to underpay and micromanage the shit out of any nanny you hire.

Good luck keeping anyone.

Exactly! OP you have your mind made up so what was the point of posting? To see if you ppl would agree with you so that you could feel justified in losing the nanny you chose and blame her? A tight budget might mean you need to find alternative childcare instead of a nanny. But you probably like the way it sounds to say you have a nanny.
