Can someone explain to me how a live-in nanny situation works? RSS feed

Not to be rude, but it is NOT 'free rent' when the nanny is working. Just a pet peeve that I can't stand...

Sure it is. It's a benefit, like any other, and is considered in the compensation package offered to a nanny.

It is a benefit to the family, never to the nanny. Living with your boss is never beneficial to a nanny.

Except free room and board, that little thing.

Who wants to hear your hubby fights and your kid pounding floors?

If it is a full rentable apartment, you could just rent it out as such and have a live out nanny. That way you get the full rent from the apartment and that will offset nanny costs.

But then they couldn't have the benefits of a live-in nanny. Why do you think so many parents DEMAND for the nanny to live-in?

"Live-out nannies need NOT apply."

It is financially beneficial for the nanny. Get your stories straight - in the other thread the 15$/hr nanny convinced the entire world that it costs $1,500 plus utilities to have her own place plus the cost of commute to her employer (public transport or car).

Let's do some math? at 15/hr, 40 hrs/week she gets about 2600. Even if the live-in rate is drastically lower at 10$/hr for the same number of hours she would make about 1,800 per month. The difference is 800$ only, so she is saving 1500-800=700 plus whatever she would have paid for transport and utilities. I took an extreme example on purpose to demonstrate that she is better off even with below the rock bottom rates with a live-in arrangement. At 12$/hr the savings for live-in vs live out are more than a grand.

For a live in the only remaining fixed costs are a cell phone, health insurance and food. The rest is her discretionary income.

Sure, live-in is not for everyone. Just like nannying is not for everyone. But to say that there is no financial benefit is a blatant lie for anyone who can put 2 and 2 together.

Most parents do not demand the nanny live in. The only ones that "demand" it are those that advertise a live-in position.

Exactly. When they say live-in, they don't want to talk with live-outs. They want to keep you under their nose, and control.

So when they say, "principals only", do you think they like to discriminate against agencies?

Wow. You are being deliberately obtuse.

Don't you like how you're allowed to discriminate against nannies?

Who else is forced to pass up a potential job, just because of where she wants to lay her head at night?
No one. No. One.
