Bereavement Days?? RSS feed

I hope you went to work, OP. Bereavement days are actually for funeral and family logistics - not to feel sad. Adults go to work when they’re grieving.

Hugs, OP. Your cat was a lucky kitty to have you as their human. Your charges and MB are also lucky to have you.

OP sounds very, very immature.

I could not agree more.

I would fire my nanny on the spot if she didn’t come into work over a stupid cat.
She needs to put on her big girl panties and grow up!
Even when my mom’s loved poodle was hit by a neighbor’s car, she still got up everyday to go to work!
If anyone needs to call in work to grieve a deceased pet then they need to get professional help.
Animals are not in the same league as people.
Good grief op, call the “wa”-mbulance!
Besides are you truly so clueless not to believe that cats have nine lives? lol

This.

Yes, I am a huge cat lover and would be devastated if one of my cats died - but I would still go to work. If you have PTO days generally, you can potentially take those, but you don't get bereavement days for a pet.

If I were your employer, I would honestly think it was unprofessional that you even asked.

While the substance of your post has merit, the verbiage is insulting and immature.

For what it’s worth, my sister has a service dog, and when her service dog died, she didn’t go anywhere for a week. Now, I agree that there’s a difference between a service dog and a pet, but you insist that any animal is just an animal and of no worth, you are ignoring the place that those animals have in peoples lives.

But a service dog and a pet cat are different.

A pet cat is just that > a pet.
And since many cats are annoying in general (true fact!), the fact that anyone would willingly have one as a pet boggles the mind.

Why would anyone skip a workday or two because their cat died??
People lose their pets all the time and do fine the next day.
Most of them can even shower and go to work immediately.

OP sounds entitled and spoiled.
She obviously is obsessed with her cat which is unhealthy,
Her boss should fire her.

How about a friend?
A dog?

At what point do you agree that they’re not entitled to bereavement leave, but they’re allowed to have feelings without you demeaning and insulting them?

OP, I'm sorry for your loss. I am hoping you are feeling a little better.

I am a nanny and a cat lover. I lost a cat I adored a few years ago. I still worked and would have never dared ask for a day off. It was tough but sometimes you don't have a choice.

Hope you'll feel much better soon.

Because the premise of calling in sick because of a dead cat is outrageous.
Cats are annoying.
Period.

But even if they were not - the mere fact that a nanny is even considering asking for time off after its demise is just plain immature like I stated.

Immature isn’t the same as unprofessional.

And your judgements about cats are irrelevant to the discussion.

I took a day off in BigLaw when my cat died, and I currently employ a nanny whom I would give time off for a pet passing away. No one ever called me unprofessional let alone immature (and I can assure you that it did not affect my career trajectory). Pets are members of the family and this is perfectly reasonable. OP, I am so sorry for your loss.
