Yes, of course, we pay our nanny when we go on vacation. But no, we have never asked nor needed her to come with us. I doubt she would agree anyway as she has a life of her own.

If your nanny does not have her own room while working for you - either as a live-in or on vacation - it is considered "working around the clock" and the nanny must be paid for those hours.

Yes, when Nanny comes on vacation with us and stays in DD's room we pay extra her for the hours she is asleep with DD. But that is why we asked her to come - so that she could sleep in the hotel room with DD.

I don't pay my nanny when we are on vacation. Why would I? She isn't working. Don't you like having days off from your job?

Really? If your company closes for a week and says, "congratulations! you are off without pay" you like it? How about if they do that several weeks each year, so you never know if you will be able to pay your rent or not? You still like it? This isn't your vacation, where you get paid time off. This is your employer forcing you to take unpaid leave when you are willing to work. You still like it?

OP, we have always paid our nanny when we take vacations. She usually checks the mail and the house once a day while we are gone, which gives us peace of mind. And BTW, we leave for about 8 weeks annually.

Your nanny isn't very smart if she agrees to that.

That's why some parents want dumb nannies. Then they'll scream bloody murder when something goes wrong.

+1 You have no business hiring a nanny and then tell her, "oh, yeah - we're taking two weeks to go to Disneyland so you will lose two weeks pay -- but make sure to be here on time when we return".

My company closed for a week for retro-fitting and we were all paid for that week where, through no fault of our own, we were unable to work.

Yes, she has guaranteed hours. If she comes with us then we absolutely pay her more for the extra hours as well as the inconvenience of being away from her own home.

Same here. We took her to the Caribbean for a week with us to help cover a wedding. We were clear upfront when our obligations were and when we needed her and she agreed and had a fun time. She was paid her usual weekly amount and all room and board, travel. We also greatly enjoy our kids on vacations so it was far from her "working" 24/7 or whatever anyone else here is having a fit over.
Maybe on an office/work trip with the kids and nanny it would be different.
No one is having a fit over anything. Nannies are simply saying that a vacation for you is a work trip for your nanny. Of course you have to cover all the expenses including compensating her for her time outside of her home. If you can't afford to do so, that's fine. Let her stay home and you make other childcare arrangements.


I would never take some with an attitude problem on vacation with me so I guess that solves that!

Thanks for being honest. Staying home getting paid to do nothing is certainly ideal to some people.

Going on vacation PP? Want to have the same childcare arrangement that you did before you left? Going on vacation and coming home to no childcare will not be ideal to you.

I don't like paycheck to paycheck, so it really wouldn't concern me. As long as they gave us notice we can take a family vacation at the same time. But, I know my company won't do that to me because I have a real job and am not a nanny. If I was a nanny I would expect this. It's not unheard of.

And do you acknowledge that most nannies DO live paycheck to paycheck? Or do you completely lack understanding of the economics of childcare?

Must be nice to live in your little entitled world.

BTW, I am the MB with 8 weeks away annually who posted earlier. Our HHI is 3MM+ - and I still manage to understand that not everyone has the advantages we do. If you cannot afford to treat your nanny like a human being, you cannot afford a nanny.
