Why do you have 6 figure childcare budget?! And you went with an au pair instead of a governess or experienced teacher turned nanny or high quality daycare/private center? Yeah, you reek of troll.

Because au pairs actually work flexible schedules without all this complaining and pushback about “job creep” (aka actually doing all of the job).

So you want a low paying work horse. Got it. Also, aren’t au pairs are only allowed a certain amount of hours? And they aren’t maids/servants are they?

Au pairs can work 45 hours, travel with you, and do child related chores including cooking (for the kids) and cleaning (kid messes and spaces) and laundry. All stuff I’ve seen nannies here moan about.

No, what you’ve seen are nannies who complain about not being compensated fairly for work and job creep. What you want is a low paying servant. Sorry that educated and experienced nannies aren’t settling just to make you happy. Au pairs are perfect for you.

Georgetown, GW, etc. hire RNs for less than this. 40 hours a week.

Apparently I should have skipped school and become a nanny.

You work 40hrs a week. Most nannies making this are working 50hrs a week.

Also, nursing shifts means you only work 3 days a week (but linger shifts) The nanny has to work 5 days a week. Your schedule sounds much nicer.

I am a surgical nurse I work a regular 40-hour, 5-days a week job.

We are all so impressed with your desire to go with the cheaper childcare option even though you make 6 figures. Nannies everywhere are crying over the job loss.

Budget =/= income. DCUM’s “professional nannies” leave me really thinking I never want to hire one. Not because of cost. Because of attitude.

Then why mention you have 6 figures? If you prefer the young, foreign, inexperienced woman coming to America for a cultural experience to raise your children more power to you. But no one cares what you think of DCUM nannies who aren’t pushovers. No one cares if you make 6 figures. The only person impressed by you, is yourself. So move along to the au pair forum and complain about them eating your food, wanting to party, having a boyfriend and how many times you have to rematch.

Well said.

I really don’t get why nannies on this board get so mad that rich families are also happy with the au pair program. It’s okay for me to be happy with my au pairs. It’s okay for your families to be happy with your services. Everyone is fine.

Then maybe you should actually read the comments by these so called rich and happy families. If you’re happy with your au pair then there is no need for you to comment about nannies.

If you’re a happy nanny there’s no need for you to post about au pairs

Again, you should read the threads instead of trolling. Nannies aren’t the ones posting in the au pair thread. Try again.

My previous 2 positions were 4 years each, I've taken 2 total sick days in 13 years. My certifications include CPR and first aid, pediatric sleep consultant, car seat safety, babywearing educator, and lactation support.

My benefits include 2 weeks vacation, 3 sick days, 8 holidays, guaranteed hours, mileage reimbursement and monthly car detail (I use my personal vehicle for work), $250/year continuing education stipend.

I've never turned the tv on at work ever, our days are filled with developmentally appropriate activities and outings plus of course all of the lift transitions- baby led weaning, sleep training, potty training, social skills, preschool prep, teaching independence and age appropriate chores.

To be honest, when this position phases out, I'm not sure how my starting pay in my next job will compare. I started this one at $23/hr and have received annual performance based raises.

MB here. I think you work really hard for the money. You could be earning that salary as a public school teacher in Maryland with summers off, school breaks and federal holidays, and shorter work days. I cannot imagine a lifetime of 50 hour work weeks, no mental health days, and only two weeks of vacation per year.

We pay our nanny significantly less than you earn for an average of 45-50 hours a week - but we are also super flexible with her - giving her time off when we are off, insisting she stay home when she is ill, etc. She does not have your education or experience, of course, but with all that you are bringing to bear, topping out at $81K with no flexibility (and 50 hour weeks 50 weeks a year!) seems kind of sucky to me.

Any nanny with 5+ years of experience and an education should be getting at least 3 weeks paid vacay. (And $25 per hour!)

You are not an uneducated immigrant housekeeper. Do not sell yourself short and cheap.

I worked as a nanny in Manhattan for 4 years after graduating from an ivy league university. I made $175,000 but I worked all year with only 5 days off a year and was required to travel with my employer to their compound in a remote ranch location in the NW and to their island beach home. I am fluent in 3 languages as well. I had no life and lived with the family. I used all of that time to study for the GMAT and save to pay for law school so I could graduate with no debt.

It is illegal to pay a nanny an annual salary it has to be hourly.

I’m completely ok with immigrants, legal immigrants, people that pay taxes, etc.
