Achiness and flu-ish feeling after flu shot yesterday

The current advice is not to give it pre-vaccine. There is some evidence that it can blunt the immune response. There is no evidence that it does that if given after the vaccine if the child has symptoms.

Thank you.

This study doesn't really establish anything. From the abstract:

"Observational studies reporting on antipyretic use around the time of immunization concluded that their use did not affect antibody responses. Only few randomized clinical trials demonstrated blunted antibody response of unknown clinical significance."

And farther down: "Reported use of prophylactic antipyretics in these studies varied significantly, ranging from as little as 2% to more than 90%. All the studies concluded that antipyretic use had no effect on antibody responses following immunization."

"Thus, at this time, there is no clear answer as to whether antipyretic analgesic administration blunts the immune response to a degree that could result in vaccine failure."

And these were for novel antigens, not booster shots.

The flu shot shouldn’t usually cause a fever. The shingles shot will usually give you a high fever, chills, etc for a few days. If anyone is due for a shingles shot this fall/winter, you may want to get a covid test at the same time so you aren’t concerned.

I got the flu shot and the first shingles (shingrix) shot at the same time - kicked my ass with fever, chills, aches, etc. for an entire weekend, and was followed by a skin outbreak (hives? rash? not sure what) on face, scalp, neck, hands, and chest that I'm still dealing with a few weeks later even after consulting the doctor & trying rx creams. Not sure if it was due to one, the other, or the combo, but not a great time. (I also got a covid test last week (negative).) Getting a covid test concurrently with the vaccine is good advice.

Three of us got the flu shot last weekend and no reaction except a slightly sore arm.

I had the flu vax shot at work about 3 weeks ago, and almost immediately forgot I'd had it. Just soreness for maybe 20-30 minutes.

+1

These types of post come up every year. I wonder if it's just in people's head. Psycosomatic.

I had a flu shot a few years ago where I got the shot at 4:30 feeling absolutely fine and by 6:30 I was running a 102 fever. No other symptoms, not feeling flu-ish, just fever. It lasted 36 hours, during which time I took Advil to keep it down, then vanished. I never developed any other symptoms besides just feeling too hot. It was bizarre, but yes, the flu shot can cause a fever. Ever since I get it on a day where I can make sure I don't have to do anything for awhile in case I react like that again.

Same here. And doctor confirmed it was probably from the shot and not that unusual.

I was surprised at how poorly I felt after the shingles vaccine. I asked the pharmacist about it prior to my 2nd injection (it's a two parter, like the Covid vaccine will be) and he said that it's intended to invoke a strong response in your immune system.

If the Covid vaccine does the same, hope everyone still goes back for their second does.

Bless your heart, getting both at once! My arm was just sore from this year's flu shot but the Shingrix kicked my butt as well. I hope the rash is getting better and am glad your Covid test was negative.

No issues with the flu shot for our family of four. We had the Quadrivalent from CVS.

Same here. It takes me two days to recover from a flu shot, so I have to plan it out and get it on a Friday.

Yes, just did exactly that. The Shingles first shot threw me for a loop. It wasn't fun..

A couple years ago, I either had a bad reaction, or picked up a stomach bug when I got the shot.

No problems at all this year, thankfully.

I felt really, really bad for three days after my first Shingrix dose, so I was dreading the second one. Fortunately the second dose was ok for me, with no adverse effects. It’s supposed to be a very effective vaccine, so hopefully I’ll never get to experience the pain of shingles.
