Is it true that we shouldn’t take anything to soothe the aches, like Advil or Tylenol? When my DD has her reaction, I gave her Advil to enable her to sleep comfortably. Does that really detract from the efficacy of the shot??
The current advice is not to give it pre-vaccine. There is some evidence that it can blunt the immune response. There is no evidence that it does that if given after the vaccine if the child has symptoms. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5027726/
Thank you.
This study doesn't really establish anything. From the abstract: "Observational studies reporting on antipyretic use around the time of immunization concluded that their use did not affect antibody responses. Only few randomized clinical trials demonstrated blunted antibody response of unknown clinical significance." And farther down: "Reported use of prophylactic antipyretics in these studies varied significantly, ranging from as little as 2% to more than 90%. All the studies concluded that antipyretic use had no effect on antibody responses following immunization." "Thus, at this time, there is no clear answer as to whether antipyretic analgesic administration blunts the immune response to a degree that could result in vaccine failure." And these were for novel antigens, not booster shots.
