Oh yeah improving by bringing your trapped 07s, yes that’s great. Improving by not playing all your team players fairly. That’s a great ROI. |
Metro has improved a lot. Saw the team in September and again last night, and they've made more progress this year than any team I've seen. Wasn't an own goal though. Keeper tipped and Arlington player headed in. Very fun game to watch, and Metro played a great game. |
Here, more realistic with notes. 1. VDA (Undisputed Queen of DMV) 2. Pipeline (Beat MD United 2x) 3. MD United (Beat Bethesda 2x this year, also beat FCV last fall 4-0) 4. FCV GA (2nd in GA, beat Arlington 2x, 4-0 loss to MD United) 5. FC Frederick (Beat Bethesda 2x, just beat MD United ECNL, last loss was on April 2nd to Bethesda) 6. VYS (Beat SYC, Loudoun, and tied Arlington) 7. Bethesda ECNL (Beat Loudoun 2x; SYC in fact played the 2009 ECNL team in place of the 2008s in EDP) 8. Loudoun ECNL (Tied VDA 2x, two losses to Bethesda) 9. SYC (Beat Arlington GA and Beach FC, SYC in fact played the 2009 ECNL team in place of the 2008s in EDP, losses to VYS and MD Rush) 10. Arlington GA (Beat MD United, Lost to SYC, FCV 2x, and tied VYS) |

Or, one could just use an objective ranking system and the results would then look like:
VDA 32.91 Pipeline 32.82 FCV 32.06 Arlington 31.88 MD United 31.65 BSC 31.07 Loudoun 30.63 VYS 30.48 SYC 30.31 Metro 30.21 McLean 29.92 Celtic Union 29.42 BRYC 29.35 Baltimore Armour 29.16 Basically there are 4 Tiers: Tier 1 VDA, Pipeline Tier 2 FCV, Arlington, MD United, BSC Tier 3 Loudoun, VYS, SYC, Metro Tier 4 McLean, Celtic Union, BRYC, Armour This difference between Tier 2 and 3 is pretty marginal. FCV flirts with Tier 1 but is simply the best of the middle of the pack. So the key is to look at where the biggest movement will happen next year. With the McLean/SYC merger that group is likely primed for the biggest movement from tier 3 to tier 2. VYS is most likely to drop down through Tier 4 due to a combination of the eventual loss of players as well as playing lower and lower ranked teams. In general, Tier 2 teams are just a player or two away from moving up to tier 1 but the player has to be a top 5 type player in the area. Tier 3 teams have the easiest path to join the conversation through a wider variety of adding depth players, development and in game coaching. Tier 4 teams need major talent infusion, hard to do with the posted records, but McLean has done what it needed to address that need through SYC. |
That's a fairly accurate assessment based on the games that my DD has played against for Tiers 2-4. |
No you are over valuing the Maryland teams and fall wins and loses count less vs spring wins and loses. MD United is not a top team. SYC would have beat BSC 08’s because the BSC 09’s are fairly close to BSC 08’s. It’s VDA, FCV and SYC after that all the teams are a big step down with very little difference between them. Loudoun, Arlington and BSC seems to be stagnant and being left behind while other teams have improved over the season. Coaching plays a big part in that. |
| With most of these teams, if you took between 1-3 players - depending on the team - off their roster, they would plummet down the rankings and below another 12-15 teams. Some are extremely dependent on one player. |
I’m not overvaluing anything. The numbers are the numbers. They update with new information and adjust based on strength of schedule. The truth is, looking at the teams according to tiers is more accurate than a true static number ranking. Anyone in tier 2 could beat anyone else in tier 2. A tier 2 team is UNLIKELY to beat a tier 1 team. Tier 2 and 3 are more closely clumped together and therefor more competitive between the two tiers. This is where the most competitive movement and unpredictability can happen. A player or two move can make all the difference in raising or lowering teams in either of these two tiers. A dramatic coaching change can also mean the difference in the middle packs. |
No you are over valuing SYC. This list is much more comparable. Basically though, it's VDA and the rest. |
| Soon SYC should be just a feeder to Virginia Union and they will be on this list. A lot of changes to occur 2021-2022 |
No, SYC won’t be on this list next year but that spot will be absorbed by the VA Union team. SYC has played several teams on the list and beaten them. |
You are just repeating the same information. |
It is simple, SYC’s core players will play with McLean’s core players next year. SYC has proven themselves against every ECNL opponent they have faced this year. On top of it, their “high” ranking is in spite of their current lower strength of schedule. Joining with McLean will improve their strength of schedule while having a history of being competitive against ECNL teams. VA Union should be no less than a Tier 3 team with a high probability of moving into tier 2 next year. |
Can you do tiers based on which club has the most obnoxious parents? |
No, but keep in mind, all of the teams, regardless of “tiers” are good soccer teams. The tiers is only relational, not absolute. Almost every team is a top ten team in their State but there is separation within the top ten. The point of the previous post is to downplay the obsession with team rankings. Yes, some are better than others but all of them have talented players all of the teams have dedicated and hard working players. |
