I am looking to make some changes in my diet. Weight loss is a goal, as is just generally being healthier. In addition, I've had some symptoms recently that make me worry about Type 2 diabetes. Obviously, I should go get tested, but I can't get an appointment for a couple weeks and I figure I might as well start something.
I've lost weight before on moderate carb/moderate fat plans, both South Beach and Jenny Craig, but it wasn't sustainable. My biggest issue is that I work, a lot, and a diet that expects me to prepare lots of things, count lots of things, and stop and eat every couple hours, as both SB and Jenny Craig do, isn't going to work, and on a plan that's based on 6 small meals/snacks a day, as soon as I start skipping I'm starving. So, I'm thinking that I'll try lower carb, and eating fewer times a day. For the past few days, I've been doing the following: 1) Only eating a few times a day, not snacking in between. 2) Not eating any refined grains or potatoes or fruit other than berries, but also not really reading labels or looking for hidden things. So, for the 3 days so far, I've had: Day 1 Breakfast: string cheese, cashews Late lunch/early dinner: A salad with baby spinach, a bunch of vegetables, tuna salad, feta cheese and bacon Evening snack: raspberries Day 2 Breakfast: Cucumbers, and some turkey spread with goat cheese and rolled up. Dinner: Pulled pork, some baked beans, and a salad with corn, cucumbers, and tomatoes and a vinagrette dressing. Day 3 Breakfast: cheese, cashews Lunch: Sashimi, small salad with ginger dressing, a small amount of bulgogi Dinner: Rotisserie chicken, raw veggies with a little goat cheese, berries Does that sound reasonable? I should add that the portions are large. Like reading it you're probably thinking "that's not enough calories!" But actually, there were probably a lot of calories, because I ate a lot. I haven't been hungry. Will cutting carbs help, even if I don't make it to whatever cut off the Atkins people suggest? |
You wont keep it off if you lose it that way. Are you exercising at all? If so you def need more calories. |
This seems to be some sort of paleo/atkins type thing but you allow yourself salad, baked beans, corn and plenty of cheese.
I don't personally understand the nutritional wisdom here or theory of weight loss. Bacon? Baked Beans? Corn? Cashews and String Cheese? Turkey spread? Not eating fruit other than berries (why?) I just don't understand the theory behind your choices, either nutritionally or in terms of weight loss. |
The only diet that has ever worked for me is one that counts calories. I’m only interested in losing fat though, not muscle. |
And we have no idea if that “diet” will work given you haven’t specified portions or you stats like height/weight/bf %/activity level. You could try it for a week and see if you lost weight, but even then there could be hormonal fluctuations, etc. that mask or make it seem like you lost weight when you didn’t. |
You are right that eating 6 times a day is not good for you.
I would suggest looking into a combo of low carb/moderate to high fat (don't be afraid of the fat), no sugar eating and a more limited window of eating with no snacking between meals. You do not saying what time you are eating, but if you are eating your meals within an 8-10 hour window (so between 8 am and 6 pm is a 10 hour window) that is in effect intermittent fasting which has health benefits as well, particularly for diabetes and pre-diabetes. You can read the Obesity Code and/or the Diabetes Code by Dr. Jason Fung to learn more about why this works. |
Dr. Fung is a quack. |
Is this some modified keto diet? Depending on your serving size you might lose weight if portions are small enough. As diabetes is a worry, I would try plain fasting for 24 hours, on and off each day. With eating one meal a day. It should curve the cravings and hunger pains within a couple of days of starting. BTW, my mom eats similar to your tomatoes and salads, and she is very overweight. |
This is it. 100%. Everyone is busy. I have a full-time job with a 45min commute each way and a child (who is in several activities). I'm very busy but I'm investing in myself I make the time to meal prep (as needed) and work out. There are SO many ways to cut corners meal prep wise. I buy pre cooked and shredded chicken breast to toss in just about anything, pre-bagged salad, roast a ton of veggies Sunday's to use throughout the week, pre-portion fruits/veggies to make them easier to grab, and purchased containers to pack meals in (3 compartments). This way during the week when I'm busy there is not much thought at all. I pull out a pre-packed meal, bag of fruit, yogurt, and off I go. It's strictly a numbers game, if you burn more calories than you consume, you'll lose weight. If you want this to be more than just a "diet", but more a way of life, then you need to be 100% committed, otherwise you are setting yourself up for failure. |
Honestly, just do Weight Watchers freestyle. There is a ton less point counting than there used to be, particularly if you stick to lean meats, eggs, beans, tofu, fruits and vegetables (all zero points). You won't be hungry and there's no weird restrictiveness that breeds the desire to quit. |
If you're not factoring in exercise, then cut out carbs (or at least heavily reduce them). Warning, you'll feel grumpy and cravings, but like all habits you have power through it to break it.
You don't give portion sizes, but you're not going to lose weight if, for example, you're scarfing down 5 cheese sticks and 3 cups of nuts for breakfast. |
You cut out carbs in refined grains, potatoes, and fruit, but you ate an apparently large portion of pulled pork and baked beans. BBQ sauce has a ton of sugar, typically. So no, you probably won't lose weight with this approach if you're not being intentional about checking labels for ingredients and monitoring portion sizes/calories. The other days have fewer red flags except they seem unsustainable. |
I was able to lose 40lbs and keep it off using that “quacks” method |
Congratulations. I stand by my initial statement though. |
