Why should I have to pay for welfare, public schools, Section 8 housing, etc?

Do you support funding for Israel?

Certainly NOT! Israel needs to take care of itself. They are NOT our responsibility. I support TOTAL elimination of ALL foreign aid.

You missed my point. The only way we get to choose which things our tax money (or rather, my tax money, since I don't think you've actually paid any taxes yet) is by voting. There's no line item veto on the Form 1040.

And I'm sure if you were old enough to be paying attention in 2000, you would have liked Bush just fine.

You are wrong about Bush. I'm a Paleoconservative. I would've voted for Pat Buchanan in 2000.

In public school, I learned that the government actually does have the right to collect money from citizens through taxes and spend that money in the ways they deem necessary. That's what the appropriations process is - the process by which the government decided who to spend money. If you have ever driven on a road it gone to a public library or consumed food grown in the United States, you are participating in consuming goods or services subsidized by tax money. The notion that your person beliefs should dictate public spending is more Idi Amin than George Washington.

This is strange logic. I'd hazard guess that the majority of this country (particularly the "I make $400K and am middle class" fools on DCUM) has never ever seen a child starve to death in front of them, or not have access to clean water. Does that render their opinions useless, because they've never seen extreme poverty?

If you don't believe in welfare and public education, what do you think should be done with children, poor, middle-class or rich, during the day? Not all children can afford private school, and I doubt you'd want them all at your school. Should they just wander the streets, cluttering up the sidewalks and getting into small-time or big-time trouble? How would you order things, if you became emperor of the US?

Living in a civil society, we have decided to provide welfare to citizens who need it. We do it partly out of charity and partly because we would feel bad to have people starve and die in the streets. We would no longer feel prosperous as a nation if that happened. We have public education as a foundation of our democratic form of governance, which you know because you've learned this in school.

Well, I'll help the poor on my own, and wth MY own money. The government has no right to TAKE my money and use it for that purpose. If you want to help them, help them yourself. I attend private school. Public schools are a joke.


LOL. Well the public school MY kids go to has an average ACT higher than what you got.

Considering you're all over the College Forum looking for a good fit for college next year I think it's pretty safe to say that you're paying very little, if any, into our government at the moment.

I think it is unwise to leave undocumented or immigrant offspring uneducated and at loose ends during the day. Rather than going to school, learning and bettering themselves, they would be shut out of school and working and left to get into trouble. Better, for them and for society, for them to be in school, at the taxpayer's expense.
