social smoking

I smoke like you do. I didn't classify myself as a smoker. Then I had an abnormal pap and had to have a colposcopy. It wasn't until then that I was honest with the doctor about the smoking. Two things that can cause mild dysplasia include extended birth control use and smoking. I quit smoking. 6 months later, the dysplasia had cleared.

I don't see anything wrong with social smoking or smoking at all. Just be honest with your doctor when they ask. I had no idea that my pack a month deal could cause a scare like that.

I was a smoker for 35 years and I would quit for years at a time and start and quit and start and tell myself all kinds of lies about how much I smoked. I was in California two years ago and everyone was smoking "Egos" - or ecigarettes. They had a whole artisanal market of custom blended liquids with and without nicotine.

I haven't had a cigarette since, just "vape" now - no smell, pleasant taste, no carcinogens (i use vegetable glycerin - not the antifreeze they put into some of them). I loved the inhale and the oral part of smoking and I still have it - without any of the problems. My husband, the non-smoker loves the small odor that my blend leaves because it is like smelling coffee with chocolate. Save yourselves, and don't lie about how much you smoke. No one only smokes three cigarettes when they are drinking.

In my opinion, "social smokers" are the worst because you clearly aren't smoking because of an addiction, so it's unclear why you would engage in such a nasty, harmful behavior. The only possible explanation I come up with is a lack of intelligence.

You can rest assured that the majority of the people who see you smoking have an initial gut reaction of disgust, and think that you look like an idiot. If you don't care about that, then do whatever you want and continued to smoke socially.

I don't need my DH to tell me everything, but if he point blank lied to my face about this, I would be very angry. It's behavior that can affect everyone, in theory--it's risky behavior, and as a spouse I think I'd have a right to know. And the lying is reflective of the liar's character.

Okay. Wow. I want to provide the following public service announcement since, incredibly, there still seem to be adults in this country who are unaware of the dangers of smoking.

There is no safe level of cigarette smoke exposure. I repeat: There is no safe level of cigarette exposure. It is such a toxic mixture that there is no "safe" level of exposure. So, yes, that one-cigarette-a-month habit is most definitely adversely affecting your body in some way or another. You may not be able to sense the damage, and it may be relatively minor (e.g., wrinkly skin) or major (e.g., a genetic mutation that causes the growth of cancer)...it may seem unrelated to smoking (e.g., the PP above who had no idea that precancerous cervical cells were likely related to her smoking). It may not manifest itself for years, or even decades. But rest assured that any amount of cigarette smoking is causing your body potentially serious and life-ending damage.

I remember before smoking in restaurants was banned, just going in to a building where others were smoking on the other side would make me smell! I'd come home and smell stale cigarettes on my hair and clothes and have to shower before bed.

That just isn't the case for me. If I am smoking outside, usually the smell goes away.

I don't honestly think that I am doing that much damage by smoking the occasional cig.

Smioking is only bad for American's health. Somehow the rest of the world can smoke and not all drop dead immediately and give non-smokers cancer. Good thing Europe is to our east or we would need to set up an air filter over the Atlantic. Wonder if Caliornia is considering it?

OP, you realize that no one believes you about your odorless cigarettes. It just does. not. happen. If such a thing existed, every teenager in the world would want to buy them. I totally believe that YOU can not smell yourself - smokers usually can not - but everyone else can.

You may very well be one of the few who lives to a ripe old age despite a lifetime of smoking. This, however, is quite rare. The thing about tobacco smoke is that you never know which lungful is going to be the one the causes the precise mutation that starts the chain reaction into the development of cancer or something equally serious. If you're willing to take that chance, then by all means, continue to smoke.

Oh, and yeah, if you're outside, the smell just "goes away" into the lungs of passersby. Thanks a ton for that.

A quick Google search will educate you on the reality that tobacco-associated mortality and cancer rates are just as high in other developed countries (those that actually measure these things) as the U.S.

Also, no one is claiming that smoking causes one to "drop dead immediately." It is more typically a long, drawn out process.

^^ obviously I know the health ramifications of smoking and how it all happens. I just think that it's interesting how some people, particularly on this board, are so vehemently upset about it and personally attacked by second-hand smoke.

I would rather someone walk past me with a lit cigarette than walk past diesel exhaust fumes or those horrible vendors in New York city that use coal or something to heat their stands -- all of which aren't good for human lungs.

Cigarette smoke is much more harmful than either of those things (auto exhaust or street vendors).

I also, don't get why people are so mad that I am "lying" to my DH. If he was to ask me "have you been smoking" I would tell him the truth. Just because I don't tell him doesn't mean I'm lying.

Long, drawn out, painful, ugly, debilitating, awful process. I'm actually surprised that more smokers haven't had loved ones die of lung cancer or COPD...it's a horrible thing to go through and it's equally horrible to watch someone you love go through it. I'm happy for the OP that she's living in a la-la land where her "social smoking" doesn't smell or do any damage to her body. At some point, reality will hit, and she'll realize that she was a moron.

^^By then, it will likely be too late.

If a person's smoking didn't affect the rest of us, then I would be 100% in support of smokers smoking themselves to ill health and eventual death. The problem is that the smoke they produce gets into our lungs, too.
