I smoke like you do. I didn't classify myself as a smoker. Then I had an abnormal pap and had to have a colposcopy. It wasn't until then that I was honest with the doctor about the smoking. Two things that can cause mild dysplasia include extended birth control use and smoking. I quit smoking. 6 months later, the dysplasia had cleared. I don't see anything wrong with social smoking or smoking at all. Just be honest with your doctor when they ask. I had no idea that my pack a month deal could cause a scare like that.
Okay. Wow. I want to provide the following public service announcement since, incredibly, there still seem to be adults in this country who are unaware of the dangers of smoking. There is no safe level of cigarette smoke exposure. I repeat: There is no safe level of cigarette exposure. It is such a toxic mixture that there is no "safe" level of exposure. So, yes, that one-cigarette-a-month habit is most definitely adversely affecting your body in some way or another. You may not be able to sense the damage, and it may be relatively minor (e.g., wrinkly skin) or major (e.g., a genetic mutation that causes the growth of cancer)...it may seem unrelated to smoking (e.g., the PP above who had no idea that precancerous cervical cells were likely related to her smoking). It may not manifest itself for years, or even decades. But rest assured that any amount of cigarette smoking is causing your body potentially serious and life-ending damage.
