| Lifetime yo-yo dieter here. In my 40s it finally caught up with me. You'd think at 50 I'd know better, but I still surf the internet and buy ingredients for a different "fast weight loss" diet every week, and after a few days of being hungry end up gorging and giving up. I haven't even been able to stick with Weight Watchers for more than a week. Has anybody successfully given up crazy dieting and started to live healthfully? Especially "older" women? Appreciate your tips/stories! |
| You have to make the mental shift. Your problem is purely psycholocgical and the fast that you are looking for a quick fix. Patience. It took me 18 months to lose 30lbs and it is very easy to keep it off. I can go on a week long binge and bounce back down those 5lbs of gain in a matter of 2 weeks. You also HAVE to exercise hard consistently. I constantly see people at the gym on the elliptical or bike looking like they are on a Sunday stroll, and they NEVER wander over to the weights or into a spin class for more than 30 seconds. |

Here is the question, what do you think is going to happen at the end of the miracle diet where you lose the weight you want quickly? If nothing about your eating habits changes, you will be right back where you started before you know it.
You need to get a handle on what you can eat and learn to eat mindfully as they say. As far as exercise goes it is great for you and will keep you healthy and energized and more, but it will not drive your weight loss unless you become a serious athlete. Weight loss happens in the kitchen, fitness happens in the gym, and I do not take credit for making that up but it is true. If you want to get your weight under control you need to understand what you are eating and what your body needs. I am 47 and I lost 36 pounds over 7 months. I feel better about myself physically and my appearance than I have since my mid 30s. I did it by creating a moderate caloric deficit over an extended period of time. I used a free calorie tracking app on my smartphone. I did not try to lose weight fast, my goal was 1 pound a week so I did not ever feel like I was starving. I weighed and measured my food. I ate almost anything I wanted but I planned for it. I made exceptions on occasion for a big night out, birthdays, vacations, etc. In short, I learned how to eat as the slimmer person I wanted to become. I read the suggestions on fat2fitradio.com, where they have calculators for what is a reasonable calorie deficit that can get you to where you want to be while you learn to eat appropriate amounts. |
| Paleo. I eat what I like and I'm not hungry. Also going to the gym. I love to bake so I fatten up my coworkers. |
| I stopped dieting altogether. I instead focused on being active and eating healthy and in moderation. It doesn't give results as fast as dieting, but it's much more long lasting. I still vary by a couple of pounds from month to month, but it stopped mattering so much to me. I feel happier with my body image, I also stopped obsessing about pounds and step on the scale may be once or twice a month. I am also not stick thin, but I am physically active and happy. |
| Start viewing your goal as getting a healthy body rather than losing weight or getting thin. You still have to practice portion control even when the food is healthy, though. Believe me, I've been battling this forever, so it seems. Bottom line is no "quick weight loss" plan will ever work long-term. |

I saw a Naturopathic Dr. in DC, Marie Rodriguez. Her suggested Anti-Inflammatory eating plan and the remedies she prescribed healed me and I lost weight. Now I know what foods affect me negatively and I steer clear.

My husband has been able to achieve this. We both started out with the Master Cleanse for fast weight loss. I lost 30 lbs, but it came back on. DH kept his weight off by doing the healthy living style in "5 hour body" book. It's all about limiting carbs for 6 days a week, but allowing unlimited portions of everything else. On the 7th day, you can eat anything you want.
DH has maintained his weight. I'm back on the Master Cleanse right now, after which I'll start on the same plan he is on. I'm not going to gain back my weight this time..I SWEAR!!! |
Horrible advice. |
