Schools for SSFS families

Burke is about 2 blocks from Van ness/ UDC on the Red line. We love the school. The campus is very different from SSFS’s acreage, but it still kind of feels like an oasis.

Agree about the campus! They’re not considering 8th grade apps though since the current 7th grade is over-enrolled. But I would absolutely ask about 6th and 7th for next year. (And if looking for a younger sibling, Sheridan is just a few blocks away!)

If ok with DC the River school has LOTS of openings for 2025-2026.

Many schools have bus service so be sure not to rule them out before checking.

You just create a random list and expect people to believe you?

What are AHC and St John’s Episcopal like? I realize now that I’d assumed AHC is quite conservative, but I don’t know anyone there, so I have no idea what it’s actually like.

Green Acres is in Rockville. Lowell would not provide a quarter of the loving, supportive environment that SSFS provides - especially after having to switch all the sudden.

So sad for the SSFS families. I used to work at the camp many years ago....lovely campus, lovely people.

I am the person who added AHC. I don't know anything about St. John's Episcopal, other than that it ends at 8th and AHC begins at 9th so the same kid wouldn't be choosing between them.

Obviously, there are lot of differences between AHC and SSFS. AHC is single sex, high school only. Students wear uniforms. Also, of course Catholicism and Quakerism are two different religions. AHC has a fair amount of political diversity, I suspect more than SSFS.

But there's also a lot the same. Both are schools that have strong commitment to social justice, and community service. Both are schools that allow kids to have balance, to try different things. Both celebrate the whole child. Both accept and support kids with varied strengths and weaknesses, rather than only the top performers. Both are small enough schools that every child is known, and big enough schools to offer a variety of experiences.

If you have a high school aged daughter, I think AHC is worth exploring.

Anonymous wrote:For those in HoCo with upper schoolers, there is a bus company with a common pick up area in Columbia that drops kids at the Baltimore privates (Friends, McDonough, Bryn Mawr Gilman.) Also, Glenelg Country School may have spots.

The bus (kangaroo coach) drops off kids at Baltimore privates (Bryn mawr, Gilman, Friends, RCPS) and you have to pay extra for transportation to these schools.

McDonogh, on the other hand, has its own bus which is included in the tuition.
