Schools for SSFS families

Anonymous
I thought it might be helpful to start a thread specifically for listing schools in the area with characteristics similar to those at SSFS. A few names have surfaced in the original SSFS closing thread, but there's so much else in there that finding them could take a while.

It's too late to apply to lottery or magnet public schools, and folks are aware of their in-boundary schools, so here are some independent schools with traits shared by SSFS:

Barrie, Silver Spring, Pre-k-12
Bullis, Potomac, K-12
Burgundy Farm Country Day School, Alexandria, pre-k-8
Christian Family Montessori School, pre-k-8
Edmund Burke School, DC, 6-12
Field School, DC, 6-12
Friends Community School, College Park, pre-k-8
Friends Meeting School, Ijamsville, k-12
Georgetown Day School, DC, pre-k-12
Green Acres, Bethesda, prek-8
Lowell School, DC, pre-k-8
Oneness Family School, Bethesda, pre-k-12
Parkmont School, DC, 6-12
Sheridan School, DC, pre-k-8
Sidwell Friends, DC pre-k-9

I know you’re trying to be helpful but the majority of people ( not all) are local to the school and that’s why they chose it.Theyre not schlupping into DC on a daily basis to drop Larla at Maret or other schools more than 45 mins away.

I think that’s true in the early grades. My high schooler has friends who travel to SSFS from DC or southern MoCo. Or Howard County, which makes Baltimore schools options.

Listen, people do all kinds of things for all kinds of reasons. This is a wild time, where hundreds of children need a seat at a new school.

A wider net is wise in this case.

I'd agree for lower school or long-term decisions, but I feel different for MS and definitely HS. And in a situation like this, I'd be willing to schlep for a good fit. (Heck, I did a truly insane commute during Covid for my oldest kid and would do it again.)

A little bit far afield pedagogically, but the Mandala School in Bowie looks like a nice place to be a kid!

For those in HoCo with upper schoolers, there is a bus company with a common pick up area in Columbia that drops kids at the Baltimore privates (Friends, McDonough, Bryn Mawr Gilman.) Also, Glenelg Country School may have spots.
