My spouse is a Midwest physician surgical specialist. Safe to say we know a lot more physician families than OP and PP. Most are not living like this. There are a couple Teslas, and some own a small vacation cottage on a lake, but no one has the ultra lavish style described. Most of the moms are driving around in Toyota siennas and some even clean their own houses. |

My DH is a PhD in a university and regularly works with research doctors because he helps them with their funding. So he’s familiar with their lifestyle as he had developed good working rapport with them. This is from a big university hospital and in a big city. I can tell you, even at the level of specialized surgeons and aesthetic specialists, they’re not living the kind of lifestyle you’re describing, OP. Yes, they typically have second vacation homes, drive Tesla or a nice SUV, live in UMD subdivisions but their kids work at Panera, local theater and pizza places for summer. I know because they’re schoolmates with my DD and they work in same place. They don’t sport designer bags. I don’t know where you live, but no designer bags for these MD families demographic here.

This post is HILARIOUS! What kinds of doctors are these? Are they all plastic surgeons? Neurosurgeons? Do you think maybe your kids' friends just have a lot of family money, or that maybe one parent is a doctor and the other one is a successful business person?
Someone commented saying that primary doctors don't make a ton, only specialists do. Well a lot of specialists don't make that much either. I mean, sure, you can make $200k, $300k+ but that's not going to get you a multimillion dollar house. Also, Teslas? They're not even that high end. Maybe pick an actual luxury car to make your point. I love how you say these families have multiple houses...and that they drive Teslas. Not impressed. Maybe hate on the private school instead. Or don't send your kid to private school. Why are you venting about doctors who happen to be rich?? PS I'm married to a doctor (not primary care - a specialist!) and we're not rich. I make more money than DH. Shrug. |
You think doctors who are UMC do t save lives every day? |
|
“Provincial” America? Haha. Doctors aren’t making millions anywhere OP, even specialists. The vast majority of physicians are hospital employees now also. The only ones making millions would be the minority (by far) and have ownership of the endoscopy center, outpatient surgery center, a nursing home, or high end plastics. A doctor salary of 500k in the Midwest maybe seems luxurious, especially compared to a doctors salary of 300k in DC. But neither are living like the Wolf of Wallstreet |

500k in a lower COL area buys the lifestyle that OP described. Why does that make you so angry? A 2 doctor household can easily make 600k-1M and that’s a lot of money everywhere in this country. |
2 doctors… while one law partner or hedge fund partner pulls in multiple millions. Doctors deserve their money more and OP is a jealous Nelly. |
I’m the PP you are responding to and not angry at all. Just pointing out the reality of dr incomes, since OP seems delusional. In fact, it describes my family’s income and I wouldn’t consider us lavishly wealthy. |
I responded to your Dyson’s Airwrap question. I was in the camp that it’s too expensive and we have millions. I also don’t agree with buying fancy bags either. My problem with you is that you went after doctors, begrudging them their wealth and creating some strawman about medical debt. You are just jealous and it’s gross. |
People usually over estimate how much attorneys make. There’s a glut of attorneys and unless you get into a big firm with money you’ll have a middle class salary. And who would study to become a doctor for vanity reasons? I can’t think of too many jobs tougher and more important than becoming a doctor. It’s a lot of work, sacrifice and responsibility just so you can say”call me Dr. Vanity “. |
Lady, you can afford a high end private school or a $600 kid's gift and yet you are here complaining about designer bags. If designer bags are what's important to you then get your kids out of private school, put them in public schools and buy them all the designer bags that your heart desires. Also I find it odd that you asking the forum for permission to buy a Dyson Airwrap (full disclosure I have no clue what that is). If you can afford it and it adds value to your kids life then go for it. You don't need strangers votes. Overall I what I have to say is grow up, prioritize what important to you and don't try to keep with the jones because there is always going to someone wealthier than you and some people just spend more lavishly than others. |
| Values are taught at home. So instead of blaming rich doctors or their children, focus on your family. Ask yourself why your DD asked for designer stuff. Could it be that you didn't teach her the values you want her to have? Sorry, but my DD would never ask for designer stuff even if some of her friends have it. She knows that stuff is a waste of money. She knows that people are in need. In fact, she would probably think a fancy device to blow dry hair that costs $600 is also a waste of money. |
Oh for gods sake |
