I am director of Chevy Chase Reggio which accepts children on a rolling admissions basis so you do not have to wait until September to enroll. CCR follows the Reggio-Emilia approach developed in Italy 40 years ago. The Wikipedia entry on Reggio is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reggio_Emilia_approach.

We offer tours to interested parents on Wednesdays at 5:30 by advance appointment. Please visit www.ChevyChaseReggio.com for more information.

To the PP, CCR is a learning center for children from the ages of 2 to 5 years old. We are a preschool, however, if you have a 2 year old, you may think of it as a daycare with real educational instruction. If your child is 4+, the depth of instruction is greater to prepare the child for entering kindergaten. From what I can tell, almost all of the preschools in this area call themselves preschools even when they have children at age 2. From my experience, the term daycare seems to be a shared babysitting service. In many cases, the operator is simply watching your child without any program to teach them.

In our case, Chevy Chase Reggio is a preschool that uses the established Reggio-Emilia approach for teaching children 5 years and younger. Please visit www.ChevyChaseReggio.com or look at the wikipedia entry to learn more about Reggio: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reggio_Emilia_approach.

Many programs have preschool for 2 and 3 year olds as a convenience but they are structured along the traditional school year. That makes sense for preparing kids going into kindergarten or a private primary school with staged curricula. But what value is this for a 2 and 3 year old. My program is based on continual learning and reactive to the interests of each child. We have several just-2 year old children who are starting in January.
Hi, I operate the new Chevy Chase Reggio center. There are similarities between the two excellent approaches but in general Reggio-Emilia is an organic learning model built around a child’s natural curiosity and creativity. Unlike Montessori, Reggio-Emilia is tailored for children 6 years and younger based on scientific observations that toddlers learn very differently than older children. In fact, toddler brain chemistry and cognitive patterns are quite different. Sometimes Reggio is described as a “play-based” program which means we allow toddlers to learn through a range of structured play activities. Play-time is not random play. Children are allowed to find specific activities that interest them and each day lessons are built around these activities. We do not use flash cards or rote memorization techniques. We do not require kids to sit quietly and work through one task at a time. We believe kids 2-5 years old need to learn from doing things, interacting with other toddlers, and explore their environment.

If anyone wants to learn more about Reggio-Emilia, please visit www.reggiochildren.it or my website, www.chevychasereggio.com.

On the last post, we are hearing about this kind of pressure from moms with 2 and 3 year old espeically. If you are looking for a great program without this status pressure, please visit our program at Chevy Chase Reggio. My program uses the Reggio-Emilia approach. We have openings for 2 and 3 year olds and open houses this month. Please look at www.chevychasereggio.com for more information or call me.
Hi, I see several posts lately trying to find a Mom's Day Out program for their 1 and 2 year olds. Usually these are half day programs with moms staying with their children. I operate Chevy Chase Reggio and we would be open to starting such a program if there is a need. We have a large facility and would be happy to host. Please email me at info@chevychasereggio.com if anyone is looking for this. Sounds like lots of moms could use something like that.

Hi, I have started a new day care and pre-k program for children 5 years and younger. Chevy Chase Reggio uses the Reggio-Emilia philosophy developed in Italy 40 years ago. Many educational experts believe Reggio-Emilia's approach is ideal to prepare children for kindergarten. We have openings starting in January. We are having an Open House after Thanksgiving on December 6, please call 301-951-1885 or visit my website for more information: www.ChevyChaseReggio.com

Since you are open to non-Montessori programs, I encourage you to look for a Reggio-Emilia based program. This is quite well known in Europe and taking root in the U.S. more frequently. Recently, Google adopted this method for their own inhouse school. I operate a new daycare/pre-k program in Chevy Chase called Chevy Chase Reggio (www.chevychasereggio.com) and would be happy to fill you in more about this approach which is tailored almost entirely for children six years and younger.
On the last post, you are right to be disappointed with structured, rote memorizing approaches. I encourage you to look at programs using the Reggio-Emilia method. There are a few in the DC area now.

Hi, I have started a new day care in Bethesda/Chevy Chase. Several moms have asked me to think about offering an all day spanish immersion program for 2-5 year olds. I am from Peru but also fluent in English (went to college at American and Hopkins).

Learning a second language is so easy at age 2, 3, 4 but I realize its also easy for kids to lose it without regular practice. The language programs I've seen in the area are mostly 1 and 2 hours a week which is rather limited. What I would do is provide a full day program, maybe 1 day a week or even full time. I would appreciate any feedback other moms have on whether a Spanish immersion day care would be worth looking at.

Thanks.
