I think you should reconsider driving the entire way. Both Hartford and Boston have cheap airfares. BWI to Boston Friday morning to Monday night is $600 for 4 people on Spirit. It is a 2 hour drive to Portland from there.

We do the same. Actually just came back last week. 12 hrs both ways with 2 or 3 stops. we stay right in Ponte Vedra Beach. Flights, though, are cheap if you plan. They were as cheap as $140 roundtrip total this spring.
