Hutchings needs to go (ACPS)

Anonymous
Let us enumerate the ways he has continued to fail our children, especially low income, ELL, and special needs. His continued disparaging of parents’ expression of REAL concerns about the safety of their children in school is unprofessional and, quite frankly, a dereliction of duties. Last night’s rant about parent emails to the school board is my last straw. I care about solving racism in our schools, but his continued ignorance about how his policies inequitably impact children in protected classes and disadvantaged groups is damaging our children and the future sustainability of ACPS. He needs to go.

How does this happen?

100% agree. If you want him gone you need to elect school board members that will not fawn all over his every word. So basically - don't reelect any incumbents, and carefully research the new people running. Anyone that has worked for ACPS in the past (Pree Ann, Tammy) should be considered strong allies of Hutchings.

Yup. I’m in district B and will not vote for either of them. But he needs to go now.

Can we recall him?

Jeff needs to pin this thread to the top of the forum and put gold stars next to the title.

A list of all candidates for school board who support his ouster would be great!

He responded to parents' concerns about the fact that ACPS is not doing any outdoor lunch by complaining about parents having the audacity to email him (and the school board members), thus wasting their time and preventing them from doing their jobs. He insistied the concerns about overcrowded indoor lunches were invalid because they emails were part of an "organized campaign". There was no substantive discussion of the actual issue or of possible solutions. It was really bad. I have not been a Hutchings or ACPS critic until now, and I love my students' school. But I was disgusted.

That was horrible. It totally distracted from the important topic of outdoor lunch. It would have been sufficient to say that, due to the volume of emails, there is no way he could personally answer each one, and then move on to the very important substance of what parents are asking for to protect their children's health.

At the working session of the school board, on the agenda was to discuss outdoor lunches, added I’m guessing as a result of email campaigns driven by Ms. Westfall and others (although I emailed the school board and superintendent separately, of my own volition, using my own words, because I was incredulous that my two elementary kids would be filing into a lunch room with 150-200 kids to eat). For a large portion of the time spent “discussing” outdoor lunches he basically ranted about how parents sending emails were clogging his inbox and wasting his time, saying this (emailing the board) “is not how we operate” and that he has “work coming through that same email address that is VERY IMPORTANT STUFF” and he has to “filter through [emails from parents]” to get to the important “daily” work. He goes on to talk about how people accuse him of being defensive and making excuses and that he doesn’t do that (after talking about all of the excuses for why outdoor lunches are hard). He wants people to stop sending emails, especially “copy paste” emails about outdoor lunches and tents.

Basically he knows best, parents are idiots, he makes the decisions around here.

2:21 they start talking about lunches, 2:27:30 he rants about parent emails.

I am just bewildered. Even if he thinks he is too important to deal with the emails, and that most people in ACPS are a silent majority that loves him, why would he say this at a school board meeting, rather than addressing the underlying concerns? You don't have to be a genius to figure out that you keep those kind of thoughts to yourself.

Thank you for posting. I will work on my email today to him and select board members. Last meeting, he either showed a complete ignorance of COVID mitigation / the delta variant and/or he was willing to say anything to support his position on the testing of unvaccinated staff. Now this plus the horrible SOL scores for which he is responsible.

Sure you can get him fired but good luck with the next person.
They have churned through a lot of Superintendents over the past 15 years.

If parents really want a better education experience, than they will need to stop looking for candidates who say the most woke things or fit their bill as the most woke person.

No, he is employed by the school board not an elected official. The best course of action right now is to vote in school board candidates that will hold him accountable and possibly terminate his contract. Enough is enough with this guy’s shenanigans and hubris.

There aren't a lot of choices. For example, Disctrict C only has 3 candidates for 3 positions. Nobody wants to run for school board. It's a crap unpaid job and a huge time commitment.
